MUST WATCH ? Blockbuster mini-documentary on the Obama admin and Israel: Absolutely Uncertain

This must watch mini-documentary by Right Change puts everything together on how the Obama administration is just hot air when it comes to supporting the state of Israel. After watching it, my mouth was agape. It already has over 650k views in just three days:

A new, 18-minute mini-documentary follows the journey of Irina, a 23-year-old liberal, Jewish New Yorker who voted for Obama in 2008. Yet as her connection to Israel has grown, and she has learned more about the President?s policies across the Middle East and towards Israel in particular, Irina has come to realize that ?when the chips are down,? the President may not ?have Israel?s back? as he says.

(AP) ? Arnold Schwarzenegger says his wife, Maria Shriver, was told to "snap out of it" by her mother for her attempts to persuade him against running for California governor in 2003, a conversation that ultimately opened the door to his successful candidacy.

Eunice Shriver told her daughter that her husband would be "angry for the rest of his life" if she stopped his ambitions, Schwarzenegger writes in his new autobiography, "Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story."

The former governor says in the book that he had decided against running to recall Gov. Gray Davis after his wife implored him not to for the sake of their family. Maria Shriver announced his decision to their four children.

But he writes that when Maria Shriver told her mother about her efforts to thwart Schwarzenegger's political ambitions, Eunice told her daughter that women in their family "always support the men when they want to do something." Schwarzenegger says he didn't know about the conversation at the time, but learned of it later.

Maria Shriver then softened her stance, paving the way for Schwarzenegger to announce his candidacy on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," where he says he felt most comfortable.

The announcement came after a week of wavering. Schwarzenegger says before he headed to the TV appearance, his wife handed him two pieces of paper with talking points she had written: one in case he decided to run, another in case he decided not to.

He writes that Shriver went on to become a key ally and adviser to his campaign and eventual governorship.

Schwarzenegger has often said that Maria's mother and her father, Sargent Shriver, were essential to his eventual decision to seek public office, and the most "extraordinary human beings I've ever met." But he also writes in the book that he often teased his wife that the close-knit Democratic Kennedy clan was "like a bunch of clones" because there was such conformity among them.

A spokesman for Shriver, Matthew DiGirolamo, declined to comment on the contents of the book.

"Total Recall" will officially be published next week. The Associated Press purchased an early copy.

Schwarzenegger also writes he had a "hot affair" with actress Brigitte Nielsen at a time he and Maria Shriver were dating and already living together.

Schwarzenegger and Nielsen co-starred in the 1985 film "Red Sonja." Nielsen wrote in a memoir published last year that she and Schwarzenegger had an "outrageous affair" while making the movie and that she didn't know until later that he was involved with Shriver.

In "Total Recall," Schwarzenegger writes that he knew the fling with Nielsen wouldn't last and in fact it only made him realize that he wanted to marry Shriver.

The book is part of an effort by the onetime "Mr. Universe" and Hollywood action star to rebrand himself after leaving office with a mixed record and subsequent embarrassing revelations about a fling he had with the family's housekeeper. Schwarzenegger, who fathered a son with the housekeeper, says he also let the boy down.

Schwarzenegger, 65, said he avoided telling his wife for years about the boy, who is now a teenager, even when Shriver asked him, partly because of his longtime penchant for secrecy, and his fear that the news would become public and undermine his political career. He told his wife in January 2011, when she confronted him the day after he left office.

In an interview with "60 Minutes" scheduled to air Sunday, Schwarzenegger said having sex with his housekeeper was "the stupidest thing" he ever did to his now-estranged wife and caused great pain to her and their four children. CBS aired excerpts of the interview Friday.

"I think it was the stupidest thing I've done in the whole relationship. It was terrible. I inflicted tremendous pain on Maria and unbelievable pain on the kids," Schwarzenegger tells "60 Minutes."

Schwarzenegger says he also let down the son he fathered with the housekeeper.

Shriver filed for divorce in July.

In his book, the usually ebullient Schwarzenegger admits to some loneliness, even though he packed his schedule with speeches, projects and movie-making after Shriver and the children moved out of the house. He said his career had been fun for 30 years because he shared it with Maria.

They had done everything together, he writes.

The former GOP governor also writes about a 2003 White House meeting with Karl Rove in which the top GOP strategist told him the recall would not happen and instead introduced the actor to then-national security adviser Condoleezza Rice as his pick to run for California governor in 2006.

Schwarzenegger felt snubbed.

He asks, "How could Rove have been so wrong?"

Rove's office said he was traveling Friday and could not be reached for comment.

Rice's chief of staff at Stanford University, Georgia Godfrey, said Rice cannot recall "any conversation on this subject."

"She has stated many times in the past that she has no desire to run for public office and those sentiments have still not changed," Godfrey said in a statement emailed to The Associated Press.

College Degrees No Longer Required For Good Middle Class Jobs ...

college degree not required jobs

By Jessica Stillman

It's a scary world out there for young people looking to start their careers, and this has led to plenty of college education panic. Don't have a degree, say a host of hyperventilating pundits and extremely anxious parents, and you'll almost certainly be consigned to low-paid wage slavery and a stunted life. Weep, weep.

And while the data certainly show a large and growing gap between the earnings of those with a four-year degree and those without, and no one would argue with your worthy high school guidance counselor's advice that it's generally a good idea to go to college, all this hand-wringing can have the side effect of suggesting ALL IS LOST if somehow getting a bachelor's degree failed to work out for you.

Not so, says a recent study from the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce and Civic Enterprises. The research found that despite the obvious erosion of many traditional routes to middle-class earnings for non-graduates (nope, I wouldn't bet on that factory re-opening in town), there are still 29 million jobs in America that pay middle-class wages (defined here as between $35,000 and $75,000 annually) that don't require a bachelor's degree. Forty percent of those pay more than $50,000 a year. (For New Yorkers and inveterate high achievers, $50,000 might not sound like a lot, but it beats the U.S. median.)

While in the past, blue-collar gigs were the route to the middle class for non-graduates, this study reveals that most of today's jobs for non-grads are now in service sectors like healthcare or white-collar office jobs.

So how do you find your way to one of these reasonably decent jobs if you missed the boat on college? The research suggests getting one of these gigs still takes some effort, with the center suggesting five paths to this sort of steady employment:

  • Associate's degrees. Half of associate's degrees are related to career-oriented fields, such as nursing, business, and information technology.

  • Postsecondary certificates have eclipsed associate's and master's degrees as the second most common post-secondary award after the bachelor's degree-about 1 million are awarded each year.

  • Registered apprenticeships. Nine out of 10 apprentices are men and more than half of apprenticeships are in construction.

  • Industry-based certifications such as Microsoft, Cisco, and CompTIA certifications are test-based postsecondary credentials awarded by employers.

  • Employer-based training represents the largest pathway at $454 billion of spending.

Of course, while it's great to get some counterweight to the general cultural gloom hanging over those who fail to make it out of a four-year college program, the authors of the study don't think enough is being done to help those who need to find a non-college route to a good job.

"Compared to other advanced economies, the United States under-invests in sub-baccalaureate, career and technical education," said Anthony P. Carnevale, the Center's Director and the report's lead author.

What do you think? Can you get just as good of a job even if you don't go to college?

Movie review: The Master | canada.com

By Katherine Monk

Starring: Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams
Rating: 3.5 out of 5

We are propelled through the fog of life by myriad mysterious forces, forever in search of some elusive cause.

Paul Thomas Anderson?s The Master attempts to navigate these unknowns in the only way we can: Through the narrative of the personal, the intimate and the physical experience of being.

It?s an inherently murky ? and often frustrating ? exercise, mostly because we often don?t know where we are until we?ve drawn the map of our own lives to see the outline of the larger terrain, where the roads and rivers travelled attain contextual meaning.

The Master churns through these waters with such a precise vision, we may be seduced by the intense clarity of the images ? recorded on pristine 70mm film stock ? but the meaning is by no means any less abstract.

This is one of those films that washes over you like so much water, leaving you drenched with impressions and the sensation of being wet, but without any fixed location of feeling.

Fittingly, the movie opens on a ship.

The first image shows us the chop of the slipstream in turquoise waters. A group of sailors are draped over the rigging of a gunship. This is the end of the war in the Pacific, and once-battle-bound fighters are suddenly adrift in a surreal sea of peace.

They have no purpose, and within moments, the idyllic image of men sleeping on white sand turns menacing as we meet our central character, Freddie Quell (Joaquin Phoenix), a man so hungry for meaning he looks emaciated.

Freddie empties the grain alcohol fuel from the torpedoes then mixes it with coconut milk. He then celebrates his poisonous high by molesting a sand castle shaped like a woman.

It?s a terrifying introduction to one of the creepiest characters to emerge in a leading role since Norman Bates did his shower routine, and Anderson does nothing to soothe our minds about Freddie as he follows this lost, black sheep back stateside.

Emotionally paralyzed and steeped in post-traumatic stress, Freddie finds it difficult to re-enter society. Every Rorschach blob looks like female genitalia, and every chemical in the darkroom proves drinkable to the distraught drifter.

For a brief interlude, he lands a job as a department store photographer ? and this is where Anderson proves his visual talents, and perhaps offers a glimpse of his own creative muse as Freddie tortures his victims in front of the lens.

These frames aren?t just stunning tributes to Anderson?s eye and his ability to assemble a production team capable of period perfection, they shoot straight to the subconscious and our collective sense of memory.

Somehow, these images of postwar youth photographed beneath hot floodlights resonate. They push us to conjure the framed pictures of our own family, collecting dust on some dresser or hanging on the wall of the basement stairs.

They click, and it?s important we?re seeing them through Freddie?s eyes, because from this point on, we?re experiencing the universe from Freddie?s fragmenting point of view.

Anderson sets him up as a voyeur, but in fact, we?re the gawkers, and we get a very good show.

Standing centre-frame is the terrifying and terrified Freddie Quell (Fred E. Qual, a sort of Wile E. Coyote constantly falling off cliffs), as well as his would-be saviour and latter-day Satan, Lancaster Dodd (Philip Seymour Hoffman).

Together, these two have an almost Roadrunner-style relationship as Freddie chases the elusive ring of human meaning with dogged intensity, while Lancaster seems to offer the tender and juicy cure for Freddie?s spiritual hunger: Lancaster is the self-professed leader of ?The Cause,? a cultlike movement that aims to cure people of existential angst by explaining pain ? all pain ? as the remnant of past lives.

Freddie is seduced by Lancaster?s confidence and his close group of family and friends, but more than anything, Freddie is seduced by the mirror image of himself. Lancaster is another drifting soul with a menacing thirst for the bottle, but where Freddie is an outcast, Lancaster has enough gravitational mass to create his own atmosphere.

Freddie wants to breathe Lancaster?s air, and for the bulk of the running time, he sucks in the freshness like a coal miner hauling on a pipe to the surface. He grows dependent on the oxygen and the light-headed feeling, but every single frame offers a new slice of tension because both men are highly volatile.

One small spark and the whole movie turns into a fireball.

Anderson is so gifted at creating these internal gears and cogs, we?re never fully aware of the ticking time-bomb, but we can sense something is unwinding ? and that something could very well leave a crater.

It all makes for an off-kilter experience because we can never fully embrace any of the characters. Freddie remains a creepy man with curved shoulders and a concave chest, as though someone with a very large boot were standing on his torso. Lancaster, on the other hand, is a very large man with who seems entirely sympathetic ? even prophetic ? until he?s besotted by booze and sex.

The viewer has no stable terrain: We are on Anderson?s rocking ship for the duration, forced to watch the stunning scenery as it floats by like so many palm trees on a Pacific Isle, or so many dead bodies slowly rising from the deep.

A movie that forces full surrender in order to work its magic, The Master is not the kind of movie that panders with easy conclusions and lovable characters. It makes you work for some shred of escapist fantasy, then slowly but surely, rewards the slave in each one of us with a little bone of personal meaning.

GOP-Style Immigration - Linda Chavez - Page 1

Some prominent Republicans, including Mitt Romney, have recently signaled their willingness to consider legal immigration reform -- but it's not clear they understand the magnitude of the problem or the proper solution.

Romney told a Univision audience that he supported immigration reform and told a group of Latino elected officials that he'd "staple a green card" to the diploma of every immigrant who earned an advanced degree. Even stalwart immigration foe Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Tex.) seemed willing to consider the idea of more visas for highly skilled graduates in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). But the need for more highly skilled workers is only a small part of our immigration problem -- and even in this area, Republicans still appear to be appeasing immigration restriction groups rather than considering what's good for the country.

America needs more highly skilled workers, but a Republican amendment to grant 50,000 STEM graduates that failed in the House this week would simply have replaced one set of available visas -- so-called diversity visas that made available the same number of visas to applicants from countries that contribute few immigrants to the U.S. pool -- with another. Worse, if fewer than 50,000 STEM graduates applied, the visas would not be re-allocated to other classes of applicants as diversity visas had been, thus reducing overall immigration.

At the heart of Republican intransigence on immigration is one basic misconception: high-skilled immigrants are good for America, but low-skilled immigrants harm the country. Romney summed it up when speaking to donors in his now infamous YouTube remarks: "We make it hard for people who get educated here or elsewhere to make this their home. Unless, of course, you have no skill or experience, in which case you're welcome to cross the border and stay here for the rest of your life."

But those "unskilled" workers actually have skills America needs. Despite our technologically advanced society, there are millions of jobs in which the basic skills necessary are the willingness to show up to work on time every day and perform tasks that require stamina, perseverance and respect for authority. Those jobs don't always pay well, especially in industries that have low profit margins, which is why many American-born workers shun them. And those who might be expected to fill the same niche as low-skilled foreign workers -- American-born high school dropouts, for example -- aren't very attractive to employers.

Information Technology Parks to boost Philippine Business Process ...

Home ? Editorial ? Information Technology Parks to boost Philippine Business Process Outsourcing industry

Manila, Philippines ? INFORMATION Technology (IT) Parks are rising in the provinces and in Metro Manila to provide the infrastructure and connectivity needed to boost the robust growth of the country?s Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry. The new IT Parks outside Metro Manila are in the cities of Cebu, Mandaue, Cagayan de Oro, Bacolod, Iloilo, Bi?an, Tarlac, Baguio, Cabanatuan, Dasmari?as, Dumaguete, General Santos, Lipa, Naga, San Fernando, and Urdaneta, and in the municipalities of Marilao, Bulacan; Bacong and Sibulan, Negros Oriental; Rosario and Silang, Cavite.

BPO firms are the predominant locators in IT parks registered with the Philippine Economic Zone Authority. The government offers tax incentives to BPO firms, including value-added tax and income tax exemption. The IT-BPO industry is today one of the country?s biggest job creators. In 2011, the sector recorded $11 billion investments and created 638,000 jobs. For 2012, it expects $13 billion revenues on a labor force of 764,000. By 2016, it projects $27 billion revenues and jobs for 1.3 million Filipino workers.

The rising demand for call center services leads the BPO boom. The Philippines holds a major portion of the global outsourcing market, due to the English proficiency of Filipinos. Call centers count among its clients giant multinationals. Pharmaceutical firms outsource their medical transcriptions in the country.

This year, several grants and subsidies were earmarked by various agencies and institutions for the sector?s educational and technical development. The Asian Development Bank granted P27.3 million in technical assistance for skills enhancement. State universities nationwide were allocated a budget of P125 million to fund IT-BPO-based programs. A P450-million subsidy was set aside by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority for training. The Information and Communication Technology Office of the Department of Science and Technology allocated P350 million to support the IT-BPO industry.

We wish Philippine Economic Zone Authority Director General Dr. Lilia B. de Lima and Information and Communication Technology Office Executive Director Department of Science and Technology Undersecretary Louis Napoleon C. Casambre, all the best and success in their unwavering support to promote the global competitiveness of the information and communication technology sector. CONGRATULATIONS AND MABUHAY!

Greek coalition has 'basic agreement' on austerity

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? After weeks of fruitless efforts, the heads of the three parties in Greece's governing coalition have struck a basic deal on a new round of harsh austerity measures required for the country to continue getting vital rescue loans, officials said Thursday.

Finance Minister Yiannis Stournaras said the long-delayed agreement placed him in a stronger negotiating position ahead of talks Monday with representatives of the country's bailout creditors, who will have the final word on the cutbacks.

He said Prime Minister Antonis Samaras' deliberations with the heads of his two junior coalition partners resulted in "a basic agreement" on the measures intended to ax some ?11.5 billion ($14.8 billion) off state spending in 2013-14.

Under its bailout commitments, Athens must also boost state revenues by an additional ?2 billion over the next two years through tax reform and improved tax collection.

The three-party meeting came a day after more than 50,000 anti-austerity protesters took to the streets of Athens, in a demonstration marred by clashes between hooded anarchist youths and riot police.

Greece has relied on international bailouts since May 2010. In return, it imposed a punishing austerity program, repeatedly slashing incomes, hiking taxes and raising retirement ages. The new measures are expected to include further pension and salary cuts, and raising the age of retirement from 65 to 67.

Approval from European Union, International Monetary Fund and European Central Bank officials monitoring the country's three-year effort to right its finances will allow the disbursement of ?31 billion, expected after mid-October.

With that money, whose payment was delayed for months after two successive national elections in May and June, Greece will complete the recapitalization of its battered banking system and pay off long-outstanding debts to domestic suppliers.

Without the cash, the country would have trouble paying its bails. That could force Greece to default on its debts and, possibly, ditch the euro.

The conservative-led coalition has been debating the new cutbacks for about two months, but a deal was delayed by opposition from the two center-left junior partners ? coupled with disagreements with EU, IMF and ECB austerity inspectors.

Fotis Kouvelis, head of the small Democratic Left party, said after Thursday's two-and-a-half hour talks that, despite the overall agreement, "some issues are still outstanding."

And Socialist PASOK leader Evangelos Venizelos said he would "struggle to the end to ensure that these measures are not across the board and are fair ... and that they are truly the last," as Samaras has pledged.

The high-flying art market

Rich investors are buying art in droves while new artists struggle.

By John Kehe,?Staff writer / September 28, 2012

This may sound counterintuitive, but the wobbly world economy is driving fine art investment like never before. Most people are short on the kind of disposable income required to purchase notable works of art these days. But the deep-pocketed 1 percent are going at art auctions hammer and tongs, ponying up record-busting sums across the fine art spectrum. Rich investors are now seeing art as a stable form of wealth management in uncertain times, especially when compared with the imperiled dollar or euro. And a lot more fun, apparently. As artist John Baldessari told The Economist, "you can acquire something much better to look at than a stock certificate." Paying a record price is considered a smooth move, fueling both the value and allure of the work, as well as the buyer's. Case in point: At an art auction at Christie's last spring, 41 works sold for more than $1 million apiece; nine for more than $10 million. In May, the 1961 Mark Rothko painting "Orange, Red, Yellow" sold for $86.9 million. And Andy Warhol's "Eight Elvises" recently garnered a cool $100 million, thank you very much.

Now enter the Chinese, who know a good investment when they see one. They have quietly been paying top prices for masterpieces, and China has just recently surpassed the United States as the world's largest market for fine art. But the top is the top.

What about the rest of the market?

The news for the other 99 percent is not so hot. With all the serious money and buyers crowded onto the tip of the art market iceberg, the rest of it is crumbling because of lack of exposure and dwindling sales. Few new artists are deemed collectible, and many galleries have closed their doors. Here in Boston, nine major galleries have shuttered in the past four years. Several had been displaying art since the 1950s. The ease of browsing, locating, and buying works on the Internet is a pernicious gallery slayer. So is the bunnylike proliferation of art fairs. Works priced between $500 and $1,000 still hold appeal for younger collectors, but many artists who are down-pricing report earnings 50 to 80 percent less than what they were making before the recession of 2008 knocked the art market ? and potential customers' "mad money" ? for a loop.

For the moment, at least, big-name buyers and sellers will make millions, and no-name artists will continue to make art, just for the love of it.

Are Fat Men More Trustworthy?

Photo illustration of Mitt Romney as an obese man.

Photo illustration by Natalie Matthews-Ramo. Photograph of Romney by Nicholas Kamm/AFP/GettyImages. Photograph of large man by Pavel Losevsky/iStockphoto.

Julius Caesar was a chubby-chaser. If Will Shakespeare is to be believed, he would stride about the Forum making his predilections known to all and sundry:

Let me have men about me that are fat,
Sleek-headed men, and such as sleep o' nights.

While fat was where it was at for old Jules, when it came to skinny dudes, he was positively discriminatory:

Yond Cassius has a lean and hungry look;
He thinks too much; such men are dangerous.

Back in the day, heft was associated with gravitas and power, leadership, and trust. Fat blokes, by their very physiques, projected monumental indestructability. Even when they were rotting with syphilis (Henry VIII) or prone to decapitating their spouses (Henry VIII, again) they were somehow preferable to those malevolent skinny fellows (Richard III). Obese monarchs and porky politicos loomed large on any podium or battlefield, and one imagines that when they delivered speeches their words boomed and reverberated to tremendous effect. Enough to make your jewelry rattle.

It?s hard to imagine a scrawny geezer having the same kind of impact. Imagine if Winston Churchill, instead of looking like Falstaff, were to have resembled Igor Stravinsky, or a Giacometti sculpture. I cannot help feeling his we-will-fight-on-the-beaches addresses to the nation would have been much less comforting.

Today?s landscape is different. Great fat men are thin on the ground. This represents something of a paradox. Obesity rates among the masses are soaring, but there are far fewer rotund bold-facers than there used to be. This is especially true in the world of entertainment. Yes we have Philip Seymour Hoffman?is he fat or just ?husky???and the incredible James Gandolfini, but that?s about it. Some celebs like Seth Rogen and Jonah Hill debuted as fat and then sneakily lost the weight in order to get more roles.

Back when there were fewer overweight people around, being fat was a vaudevillian novelty. Heavyweights like W.C. Fields and Fatty Arbuckle were seen as special and, yes, as a barrel of laughs. As the century progressed, the entertainment industry became jammed-to-bursting with unapologetic tubsters, Hitchcock and Orson Welles among them. The list is a large one: Robert Morley, James Robertson Justice, Stubby Kaye, Rod Steiger, late Brando, y mas.

Here are my top five massively memorable movie moments from the golden age of galloping gourmands:

1. My all-time favorite silver-screen chubster is Sydney Greenstreet of Casablanca fame. No actor today could hold a candle to big Syd, and certainly none are as fat. In addition to being a great character actor, Mr. Greenstreet created a whole new genre: the extremely evil fat man. As the aptly named Mr. Gutman in The Maltese Falcon, he manages to be even more disturbing than Joel Cairo, the perfumed poseur played by Peter Lorre, and was deservedly nominated for an Academy Award for his efforts. The best scene is shot from in under Gutman?s gut:

2. The fabulously fat Syd occupies two of my picks. As Sheriff Titus Semple in Flamingo Road he sets about destroying honky-tonk-gal-made-good Lane Bellamy, played by Joan Crawford. She expresses her gratitude by?there?s no other way to describe it?slapping the shit out of him.

Brazil court orders YouTube to remove anti-Islam film

BRASILIA (Reuters) - A Brazilian court on Tuesday banned an online anti-Islam movie that spawned violent protests across the Muslim world and gave YouTube 10 days to pull the film's trailer from its website.

The decision by a state court in Sao Paulo, home to a large Middle Eastern immigrant community, came hours after Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff criticized "Islamophobia" in Western countries in a speech at the United Nations.

The lawsuit against the controversial film was brought by a Brazilian Muslim group, the National Islamic Union, against YouTube owner Google Inc for posting on the Internet a film it said was offensive and a violation of the constitutional right to freedom of religion.

In his decision, Judge Gilson Delgado Miranda said the case juxtaposed freedom of expression and the need to protect individuals or groups of people from action that might incite religious discrimination.

Miranda concluded that banning something illegal should not "offend" freedom of thought and expression, according to the ruling posted online by Estado de S. Paulo newspaper.

It wasn't the only Brazilian court ruling against Google on Tuesday. Earlier, an elections court ordered the arrest of Google's most senior executive in Brazil after the company failed to take down YouTube videos attacking a local mayoral candidate.

The legal challenges underline broader questions about Google's responsibility for content uploaded by third parties to its websites, such as the anti-Islam video, which mocked the Prophet Mohammad and sparked a wave of protests and violence in the Muslim world.

Fifteen people were killed in Pakistan during demonstrations over the video on Friday. People involved in the film, an amateurish 13-minute clip of which was posted on YouTube, have said it was made by a 55-year-old California man, Nakoula Basseley Nakoula.

Ant Camp ? Agua Blanca Creek, September 15 ? 16, 2012 | The Los ...

Things happen in the shadow of Cobblestone Mountain, at least they do to me. While I could qualify that statement with a number of anecdotes I will let those stories surface organically as I return to the places where they happened per the purpose of this blog. This Web log entry will tell the tale of my revisitation of Ant Camp on the Agua Blanca, September 15 and 16, 2012.

The Brooding Hulk of Cobblestone Mountain, taunting me again, September 15, 2012. No one familiar with Dennis Gagnon?s Los Padres guide books that were published between 1974 and 1991 can avoid using the phrase ?Brooding Hulk of Cobblestone Mountain.?

Why Ant Camp and why those potentially problematic beginning of fall dates? That story has been eloquently reported at craigrcarey.net?by the author of Hiking and Backpacking Santa Barbara and Ventura (the Southern Los Padres). In short, this was a Forest Service sanctioned survey of the route along Agua Blanca Creek upstream from Ant Camp to Saddle Skirt Camp and downstream from Ant Camp to Log Cabin Camp. My response when given the opportunity to visit the Agua Blanca country after many years away was to book a plane ticket west to LAX.?Visions of photography in Big Narrows and a night at Cove Camp were not to be denied. Also not to be denied was an opportunity to hike with five of the Los Padres illuminati: I had read their posts and viewed photographs of their adventures, now I would be part of the crew.

I don?t recall the exact year of my first trip to Ant Camp but certain, reliable temporal landmarks place it 42 years in the past, plus or minus one year.?That was also the first time I experienced the Dough Flat road. I remember bouncing around unbelted in the back of a Willys CJ5 pretending not to be terrified at the imprudent speed. Later, at Ant Camp, I learned that construction of a poorly ventilated wind shield around an Optimus 99 stove supporting a large pot placed above a full flame will cause the screaming release of a thin stream of superheated, flaming plasma through the gas cap pressure release valve.

The last time I visited Ant Camp was January, 1985. I drove to the Dough Flat trailhead in a 1974 Pinto operated sanely at a speed appropriate to the road and the modest capabilities of that vehicle. From Dough Flat I hiked the wide road past Bucksnort, continued on the wide track of 19W18 beyond the split with 20W11 to Alder Creek and followed 19W18 as it narrowed to single track at the crest of the descent to Ant Camp. After a lunch taken at?leisure?while seated at the picnic table at Ant Camp I walked easily back to my car at the trail head. On the way back to Fillmore on Dough Flat road I learned?how tenuous a bond existed between the plastic molding and the rear bumper of a 1974 Pinto.

Ant Camp

Ant Camp, January, 1985

1974 Pinto in the field.

1974 Pinto in the field.

I arrived in California August 13, 2012 aware of the hot weather forecast for the trip. But I accepted the orthodoxy borne of direct experience as well as tribal knowledge that there would be water in Agua Blanca Creek at (and below) Ant Camp. I reasoned the misery would be acceptable on the hike to Ant Camp and acceptably relieved by ample water in the Agua Blanca on the way downstream.

Visions; I had visions of photography along the Agua Blanca through the Big Narrows. I planned a spectacular (I hoped) fisheye night shot at Cove Camp complete with light painting. I had brought my heavy photographic artillery; full-frame DSLR, five lenses, tripod, panorama head and various supporting gadgets. After the fact I calculated that the weight of this equipment was somewhere north of fifteen pounds. To be sure, I was not carrying heavy shelter, rain gear, clothing or the like which somewhat compensated for the imaging load.

And then it was 5:30 AM, September 15, at staging area number one where I performed the ritual transfer of the loaded backpack to one of the shuttle vehicles. Next I knew, the shuttle square dance was nearing the final few fiddle notes and I was riding in a truck up the Dough Flat road for the first time in twenty six years. The last time I was on this idiosyncratic road, in December, 1986, Jon B. and I backpacked a loop to Sespe Hot Springs, Alder-Sespe confluence, up the Alder Creek narrows to Shady Camp and out. The vehicle for that trip was a Honda Civic.

Left Panel: View west from Sespe Saddle, December, 1986. Right Panel: Alder Creek Narrows, December, 1986

What became obvious relatively soon was that neither a Pinto nor a Civic would be appropriate transport to Dough Flat along the road in its current state. My recollection from the 1970s and1980s was that other than during heavy rains the road was kept consistently passable to Dough Flat year round and damage was repaired reasonably quickly. The fact that this post mentions trips to Dough Flat in transportation not configured for rough travel?dated January, 1985 and December, 1986 is anecdotally illustrative of this recollection.

Subsequent to parking one vehicle and reshuffling the human and backpacking cargo, we passed through the locked Tar Creek gate with the key provided by the Forest Service. We continued to a washout perhaps a quarter mile short of Dough Flat. Quite frankly, the road at this point seemed perfectly navigable by our vehicle. But, there was no reason to contravene the instructions of the Forest Service to proceed no farther. We were operating as a survey team under Forest Service auspices and I am confident to speak on behalf of the team in stating that we greatly appreciated the opportunity.

I performed the rite of the hoisting of the pack, secured the various straps and began to walk. Very shortly I was at Dough Flat and was promptly smacked in the head by the wet?mackerel?of old memories. In a moment of profound clarity my inner voice, the one that calls me ?dude,? said, ?Dude, you?ve got a distance to walk in mounting heat; pay attention? So much for sentiment; such is life in the eastern Los Padres in mid-September.

Dough Flat, September 15, 2012

Dough Flat, September 15, 2012

Assembled and ready to proceed at Dough Flat, September 15, 2012.

It was hot. Jon and I in the 1980s developed a scale of temperature that added progressively more vulgar modifiers to the single word ?hot? or ?cold? as the intensity of either increased. Today was clearly going to reach the highest level of heat obscenity.

The route along the retired road beyond Dough Flat was unchanged for the first two miles save for the?absence?of a large metal trail sign. The scene thus far in the trip was paradoxically familiar but different.

Trail sign, now gone, shortly beyond Dough Flat, January, 1985.

Hiking beyond Dough Flat

Hiking just beyond Dough Flat the route looked as I expected but without the old trail sign September 15, 2012.

The sign at the split of the Alder Creek and Bucksnort routes was present but in very poor condition. There was a trail split / reroute before Bucksnort that confused me; I had expected the wide, clear road-like tread I remembered and did not recognize the side trail to Bucksnort when we reached it. In fact, it was not clear to me that we had turned on to the side trail until I saw the Cypress at Bucksnort at which point I brilliantly asked, ?Where are we? Is this Bucksnort??

Sign at the split of the Alder Creek and Bucksnort / Ant Camp routes.

Sign at the split of the Alder Creek and Bucksnort / Ant Camp routes.

There was only a sad pool of muddy water at Bucksnort, accessible through an obstacle course of poison oak. This foreshadowed problems to come.

Beyond Bucksnort, especially when the route turned more sharply east toward the crest at the start of the drop to Ant Camp, the tread had faded to nothing. This was disorienting as I could not shake the image I had of a wide and obvious route.?I went with the strategy of following the other team members and deferred figuring it out until later.

Route to Ant Camp beyond Bucksnort

Where was my wide, road-like tread beyond Bucksnort? I strategically followed the team up ahead who clearly knew the way. September 15, 2012.

I was back in a zone of familiarity when the sharp drop to Ant Camp began. The trail was rougher with a few mildly precarious eroded spots relative to conditions in 1985 and earlier but it was recognizable. Eric (the proprietor of the Ventura County Canyoneering blog) and Nico had taken the lead on the descent and glided smoothly downhill while conversing casually with Cowboy following closely. I stumbled along behind Cowboy firmly resolved not to fall on my face and lose any aura of competence I might possess.

I negotiated the descent without a face plant and saw the old sign, much the worse for wear, at the entrance to Ant Camp. Nico kindly fired off a few shots with my camera of me with the sign, then we proceeded into camp. Eric had quickly determined, to my great surprise, that the Agua Blanca was dry in the immediate vicinity of the camp. The temperature was slightly in excess of 90 degrees.

The view from Ant Camp north toward Cobblestone Mountain.

My water consumption on the hike to Ant camp was just under two liters. I had not been terribly distressed by the heat but hydration would become an issue before long given the conditions. The stark reality of my one dry Nalgene bottle and one with a third of a liter of water framed the issue very well. We had a water problem. I was feeling some consternation but not panic as I reasoned we had several alternatives for dealing with the situation and, quite frankly, I had great confidence in the ability of this group to handle adversity. The ideal resolution would be to find a source of water nearby. To that end, Nico, a powerful, skilled hiker headed downstream on a water discovery mission.

About two hours later, Nico appeared with water just as Craig was about to put a short timer on sending a party out to look for him. He had found one forlorn, shallow, muddy, algae-laden pool of water near the site of Tin Can Cabin about a mile downstream. Further scouting downstream was not productive. Eric, Cowboy and the RSO headed out shortly thereafter to collect more water.

We had a decision to make about the future of our expedition. Given the heat and the uncertainty of water for many miles down stream the consensus (unanimous) was to pivot 180 degrees and bail out the way we came in while the sun was down. As Craig noted at the time and relates in his post, ?? the major tributaries of the Agua Blanca are downstream from Cove (below the Big Narrows).?

Dim but persistent claxons went off in my head about the night hike. I had noticed that in certain situations in dim light my depth perception, especially looking down, was not what it once was. I had consulted with an ophthalmic research group about this problem and had new glasses made specifically to address the problem before heading off on this trip. I let the others know of this concern; everyone agreed I would not be allowed to wander randomly off the trail.

After some food was distributed we settled in for some sleep before tackling the march uphill from Ant Camp. The ground was warm and with the leaf litter under the ground cloth I was quite comfortable without a sleeping pad. In fact, I slept very well until the time came to start moving.

Craig led us unerringly uphill in the dark by the light of headlamp, notwithstanding an incident or two of near sleep walking; that is how good he is. As before, I was impressed by the sure footed movement of this group of hiking pros with the exception of myself. I tangled with my old friend Mr. Yucca and had to patch my finger to keep from spoiling the grip on my trekking pole with blood. We took a rest to watch the star-filled sky and were treated to a meteor light show. We roused ourselves and completed the climb in the dark.

The passage along the uphill portion of the route out had gone much better, and faster, than I anticipated. The sections I thought would be difficult were not, in the end, terribly bad. There were likely several factors acting synergistically in this regard: gravity was working more on my behalf going uphill, my new glasses seemed to be working as designed and on the several short, more eroded sections, Cowboy, hiking in front of me, turned around and added additional illumination on my behalf (thanks, Cowboy, very cool).

We sat for a while, still in the dark, on the road just short of the side trail to Bucksnort. The crises had been handled. As far as I was concerned, life was as good as it could be at that moment.

Problem solved, September 16, 2012.

Problem solved, September 16, 2012.

We arrived at Dough Flat near dawn and walked the short distance beyond to the washout that marked the furthest point of passage for a vehicle per Forest Service instructions. Craig and Cowboy continued down the road to the Tar Creek Gate where Cowboy?s ride was parked to head to Temescal Station to pick up the gate key and the RSO?s truck. The four left behind set up the lower Dough Flat wash out lounge and waited. Craig claims we worked on some of his food during the wait and I don?t dispute that claim.

Waiting for a ride at the wash out lounge below Dough Flat.

Waiting for a ride at the wash out lounge below Dough Flat, September 16, 2012.

It occurred to me that I had carried five lenses and used one. I had not deployed the tripod and panorama gear at all. Inspiration happened; I unloaded the tripod, panorama head and 35mm Zeiss prime lens and headed back the short distance to Dough Flat. I think it likely I have the only stitched, high resolution 320 degree, 300 dpi, 99.7 inch by 18.8 inch panorama of Dough Flat, including a thoroughly demented 54 shot HDR version.

Dough Flat panorama, 320 degrees.

Dough Flat HDR panorama, 320 degrees, 54 blended and stitched frames. September 16, 2012. With this much reduction the picture looks particularly absurd but I present it as an expression of my addled state of mind at the time.

Goals can be motivating, they have their place, but they are fragile things. Saddle Skirt, Big Narrows and Cove Camp can wait. For this trip, I shifted the goal and declared success. Functioning well in the face of adversity is a worthy goal as is survival. I never imagined hiking from Ant Camp to Dough Flat in the dark and now I had done exactly that. I had not hiked with a group of highly capable Los Padres veterans in many, many years and felt honored to be include with this crew. These are the impressions that will endure, not any sense of failure. I intend to be back for another shot at the original purpose of the trip. But, of course, things happen in the shadow of Cobblestone Mountain, at least to me.

Whole Foods, Newport Beach ? Oasis for Foodies, Hipsters and ...

Last week I had the opportunity to do a preview of the new Whole Foods grocery store in Newport Beach. My initial impression is that this place was made for foodies! Located at 415 Newport Center Drive, Newport Beach California, this store is proof that the ?Foodie? culture is well ingrained in Orange County California. This multi-million dollar store is an amusement park for anyone who loves food. My only fear with this store is that if I go in for a bag of apples, I may not?come out for a couple hours!

What makes Whole Foods a serious foodie destination versus just another ?foofoo yuppie? grocery store? This store is a serious homage to all the latest food trends, and it embraces the local and organic movement. Just like the rest of the Whole Foods chain stores, you will find a very serious?selection of organic and locally grown produce, hand crafted foods, and high-end center store items. The key differences at this store reside in the perimeter of the store, mainly their Beehive Tea Market, Coffee Station, Back Bay Tavern and their fresh craft food stations.

?If you are looking for something a little more ?adult,? the beehive also offers some alcohol-infused tea drinks and several draft craft beers. Attached to the beehive is their outdoor patio, complete with?over sized?patio chairs, sofas and a fire pit. The manager confirmed that you are allowed to purchase alcohol in the store and drink it on their patio. Here is what I imagined: ordering some refreshing tea drinks, picking up a bottle of wine, chocolate and cheese from the store, and enjoying a picnic on their spacious patio.?

Back Bay Brewery

Probably the crown jewel of the Whole Foods store ? what other grocery store has a gastropub? This restaurant has a rich focus on food, micro-craft beer and wine, as well as a stylized subtle throwback to prohibition era Harlem. The look of prohibition era Harlem isn?t obvious, but more subtle with exposed brickwork, slightly industrial pendulum lights that are dressed with yellow glass, and the center piece: a solid mahogany bar taken from an old-school pub in Harlem that dates back to the 1920?s. The details are pretty complete, with hex tiles and clear stained wood furniture that allows the natural grain in the wood to add to the ambiance of the gastropub. This was one of the best decoration jobs I have seen in a while.

The food was more impressive. The dishes were simple comfort foods with a naughty edge, just like a Kansas girl going to Vegas for a bachelorette party. The menu featured about 15 main course items, five appetizers and five salads. I was able to try most of them, here are my assessments:

?

?

?The Veggie Plate? ? ?Innocent Vegetables lightly covered in Tempura ?and fried. This dish was light enough to make you still feel sexy on a date.

Wings ? Wings made from local and organic chickens. You can taste the difference in the flavor of the meat. The Wings came in your choice of Buffalo, Inferno or Ginger Soy.

Chicken Club ? Grilled Pittman Farms chicken breast and house smoked bacon with lettuce and tomato on a chibata roll. I usually do not select sandwiches because I think they will be dry, but this one is worth trying.

Tofu Sticks ? A really good interpretation of tofu suitable for folks who don?t think they like tofu. I am no granola, but I liked this dish. The tofu had a lot of flavor. They use wing sauces (buffalo, inferno, ginger soy) to give this locally produced tofu a nice flavor.

Mediterranean Cal Organic Chopped Kale Salad ? The way kale should be made. This version of Kale can make even the most fussy of 8 year olds like healthy, flaky greens. Tell you what ? bring in your 4th grader and don?t tell them what they are eating and have them try this, they just might turn into a future foodie.

SoPac Caesar -Rough cuts of romaine stacked with parmesan and Caesar dressing and croutons.

Fish and Chips ? Batter made with local beer . ?Although these were not the ?best fish and chips I have tasted, they were good.

Wasabi Pepper Seared Scallops - One of the best dishes on the menu, and despite the name, the dish was not spicy. Fresh scallops are seared and topped with micro greens. They are served with a forest of mushrooms and asparagus saut?. Great flavor combination from the sweet protein of scallop with the very subtle wasabi pepper.

Gingered Atlantic Salmon ? One of the few exceptions on the menu where I thought the food was a little boring. Although the fish itself had great natural flavors, I felt that it needed a lot more seasoning or a marinade. The salmon is pan-seared to retain its natural juices and served with radish salmon roe. On the side is an organic salad that is dressed with Peruvian corn vinaigrette.

Panko Crusted Eggplant Parmesan Fondue ? This dish was one my favorites. Chunks of eggplant are tossed in white truffle and panko and crisply fried. The fried eggplants are topped with a dollop of ?cashew parmesan?fondue.?

Cabernet Braised Short Ribs ? Short Ribs braised in Cabernet Sauvignon The Short ribs are ?served with root vegetables, corn cake, tomato confit and a Pobalano Sauce. I?didn?t?try this dish personally, but Mike from www.eatingmywaythroughoc.com loved this dish.

Tavern Burger- I was not expecting much from the burger, although I was very pleasantly surprised by the flavor and juiciness of the beef. The bun and toppings were pretty impressive, even better since it was topped with bacon jam.

?

In addition to the food, they featured a very impressive selection of draft micro-craft brews, many from local breweries. Some of the better beers that I noticed included Allagash Brewing (Portland), Ballast Point (San Diego), The Bruery (Orange County), and Bootleggers (Orange County). The wine list was also pretty impressive, and featured a variety of price points. Some wines that stood out included a buttery Chardonnay by Rombauer and Hitching Post Pinot Noir from Santa Barbara.

My Final Thoughts

This was a very impressive new Whole Foods in Newport Beach that was able to impress quite a few foodies who attended their media sneak-peek preview. I was very impressed by Whole Foods? strong commitment to its Global Animal Partnership, locally produced food, organic materials, and sustainability. These practices are engrained in the set up and practices of the store, making it easy for customers to be a part of these practices. Whole Foods did an amazing job with this store and made it a foodie destination with shopping, a restaurant and bar. I know I will be back, you just might see me on the patio with a bottle of wine and stinky cheese!
