Infrastructure - Mexico - Infrastructure investment to triple under Enrique Pe?a Nieto - governor

Infrastructure investment under Mexico's president elect Enrique Pe?a Nieto will be far larger than during the current administration, said Chihuahua state governor and Conago president C?sar Duarte during a press conference.

"Under Enrique Pe?a Nieto we could see an infrastructure investment up to three or four times larger than what we've seen in recent years," said Duarte during the central regional meeting of the national conference of state governors, Conago.

Governors from the central region of Mexico, including Mexico State, met to outline infrastructure projects for the next budget and to discuss strategic projects for the 2013-18 national infrastructure plan.

The resources for tripling the current infrastructure budget are available and would primarily come from private investment through public-private partnership (PPP) schemes, according to Duarte.

A prime example of the importance of PPPs is the construction of the 25bn-peso (US$1.88bn) Durango-Mazatl?n highway, built "without a single peso of the national budget" and using private investment from the concessionaires, said Conago infrastructure president and Durango state governor Jorge Herrera.

While the national PPP law was approved in January this year, all of the governors present at the meeting stressed the importance of passing enabling regulations that remain outstanding.

Mexico State governor Eruviel ?vila suggested that a national meeting be held to discuss the benefits and exchange experiences of PPP schemes with the aim of introducing state level PPP laws. Mexico State was "the pioneer in the subject and the first state to introduce a PPP law," according to Avila.

Key goals for the next administration include "facilitating access to financing from the national infrastructure fund, Fonadin," said Herrera.

Some 300bn pesos were available through a mixture of Fonadin resources and private investment "but unfortunately these funds were difficult to access," said Duarte.

Other key challenges for the sector include the introduction of multi-annual budgets to reduce uncertainty for long-term projects, a re-allocation of municipal government resources to increase their current 4% share of the national budget and a law to "ensure that projects underway continue despite changes in government," according to Herrera.

"Lawless" director John Hillcoat talks tunes and punches

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - John Hillcoat's high-octane action drama "Lawless" - about three bootlegging brothers from Prohibition-era Franklin County, W. Va. - has turned a neat trick.

Since debuting at the Cannes in May, the film has rescued the world of moonshine-making, fast-driving Southerners from Burt Reynolds' jokey "Smokey and the Bandit" movies and putting it in arthouses and classy film festivals via the Weinstein Company.

Despite mixed reviews, "Lawless" is an exuberant and violent genre mashup by a director whose last film was the brutally austere doomsday drama "The Road."

Born in Australia but largely raised in Canada and the U.S., Hillcoat collaborated with longtime friend and musician Nick Cave on the film. The script was written by Cave from the book "The Wettest County in the World" by Matt Bondurant, a grandson and great-nephew of the brothers played by Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf and Jason Clarke.

Two days after arriving in Los Angeles from the set of a commercial he was filming in Romania, the jet-lagged director sat down with TheWrap to talk about why his movie, which opened Wednesday, has more to do with Johnny Cash than Burt Reynolds - and whether LaBeouf really punched out Hardy on set.

Q: Nick Cave recently said that if you accept that beautiful movies can influence you to "hug your children," then you have to accept that violent movies can "inspire you to do bad things."

A: "I disagree. I've really gone out of my way to look at the evidence and study this. And the problem is there in the first place with those individuals. Surely they will gravitate and find things, but we all should be careful not to put the cart in front of the horse.

"They've done studies - and if anything, it's the more seductive imagery of advertising that can incite certain vulnerable individuals, as opposed to films that disturb. The sad thing is that the real issues of mental health, and alienated individuals who need help, and gun laws and all those things, are the real core issues that continually get lost when the focus becomes on the media. Doing that is diverting and distracting from what should be talked about."

Q: With "Lawless," you were specifically looking to make a gangster movie ...

A: "Well, I love genres, and my two favorite ones are gangster films and westerns. My dream was to come to America and make a gangster movie. And I'd love to do a proper western at some point. I'm not married to only those genres, but they're two of the great ones, particularly here in America.

"But the challenge with all genres is finding something fresh, reinventing it in some way. And what was great about (Matt Bondurant's) book is that it's actually both. It's where the western ends and the gangster begins. The Appalachian hills have a tradition of outlaws and rebellion, but from the rural perspective. And they came together with the gangsters during Prohibition, for the biggest crime wave in history at that time."

Q: Didn't the movie originally have a prologue that more explicitly tied that era to current times?

A: Yeah. We played around with that, and we decided that it was a little bit heavy-handed and was implied anyway within the material. There are a lot of parallels, I think, to these times. The divide between the rich and the poor, the economic unrest, even the environmental catastrophes have been on the rise. And, of course, the failure of the war on drugs. There are many thematic things that still resonate."

Q: When you're making a genre movie, is it necessary for you to find that connection to the current era?

A: "Not really. But one of the things I love about genre is the way it keeps reinventing itself, and the way it can reflect and comment on the world that you're brought up in. "I was watching and enjoying that reinvention as a cinema-goer from a very young age. I grew up in America, and as a young kid the films of the late '60s and '70s really kind of impacted on me - filmmakers like Altman and Scorsese and Coppola and Arthur Penn. And yet I also loved the early films, like Cagney's ?White Heat.'"

Q: Tom Hardy's performance as Forrest is unique in how nonverbal it is. In the script, were a lot of his lines just grunts, or did that come from Hardy?

A: "Well, in the book and in reality, the character was a man of few words. And yet Tom took it to a new level. It was a very audacious move, and a really brilliant one."

Q: As the director, though, did you have moments of panic where you thought, We've got actual words in this script, but he's just grunting?

A: "Yeah. I love to collaborate with actors, but there were definitely moments where it wasn't just me, it was everyone on the set and the other actors thinking, what the hell is he doing? But there's a boldness there, and taking risks sometimes pays off."

Q: I have to ask you about a story I read. According to this account, Hardy was being a real tough guy with Shia LaBeouf on the set, reflecting the tension between their two characters. And at one point Shia hauled off and decked him.

A: "Well, I have to say, it was a very intense experience. We were like family, and there were scenarios where things happened offscreen that reflected what was happening onscreen. I think it's the nature of that intensive creative thing of filmmaking, when people are really committed and inspired. So there's an element of truth to it.

"There were certainly, uh, times when Shia was ... wrestling with Tom in various ways, like Jack was wrestling with Forrest. But it wasn't quite like you described."

Q: Onscreen, moonshiners are best known as the subject of the jokey "Smokey and the Bandit" movies. Were you conscious of having to get out from under those associations?

A: "Yeah. That's what I loved about the book. It was that world of bootlegging, and I'd always had that clich? in my mind. But because these were real characters, and Matt Bondurant is a great writer who really got under the skin of these characters, he made them vivid characters that weren't those hillbilly good-time clich?s.

"But all clich?s have a truth to them, so we still have some of the outrageousness and the humor. I mean, these guys invented NASCAR."

Q: When the characters hear music in the film, you use songs that are true to the period, like "The Cuckoo Bird." But the audience also hears old-sounding versions of more current songs, most notably the Velvet Underground's "White Light, White Heat" sung by bluegrass legend Ralph Stanley.

A: "Yeah, yeah. I think two things happened. ?O Brother Where Art Thou' nailed the Appalachian-standards route, and we wanted to take a different approach. And we were very inspired by those last Johnny Cash albums, where he'd take modern songs and make them his own. His version of the U2 song "one," and even his version of "The Mercy Seat," feel like he wrote them and they came out of him."

Q: Trent Reznor said "that song isn't mine anymore" after Cash recorded "Hurt."

A: "Yes, absolutely. Cash owned it. And we wanted to explore that idea of taking the icons of country music and bluegrass, Ralph Stanley and Emmylou Harris, and yet have them sing this eclectic mix of songs in a raw country way, but not too traditional. And once we found the song ?White Light, White Heat' and had Ralph Stanley sing it, for us that was a better way of making the point that there are parallels between the two eras. Clearly that song wasn't written about moonshine, and yet when you hear Ralph Stanley sing it you think, Of course it's about moonshine."

the Galaxy Camera

Samsung today launched the first true compact camera/smart device hybrid - the Galaxy Camera, with 3G/4G
connectivity as well as Wi-Fi (which sets it apart from Wi-Fi-only competitors like the recently-announced Nikon
Coolpix S800c).

Camera manufacturers have been seeing sales of their compact cameras fall for a long time now, challenged by a
new generation of camera-equipped smartphones. As the photographic specification of phones get better, there's
less need for most casual photographers to carry a dedicated camera, and if you're in the business of selling compact
cameras, this is a serious problem. But Samsung believes it has a solution. Take a WB850F camera, and a Galaxy SIII
smartphone, and...blend them....

House of Marley Get Up Stand Up Home Audio System Tech Test ...

Product: Marley Get Up Stand Up Home Audio System
Price: $349.00 (preorder)
Rating: Recommend*

I have to admit, I was a little hesitant to open up the review sample box and get to testing out the House of Marley Get Up Stand Up Home Audio System. For the most part, many iPod docking speaker systems in the $250-$400 price range sound pretty similar, and there's usually only the most subtle of differences between competing systems. But the House of Marley speaker dock surprised with a few notable features that warmed me up to its earth-friendly vibe...

Even without any instructions included with the review unit, I was able to setup the Get Up Stand Up in 2 minutes flat. Plug it in, dock your iOS device, press "play" via your iPhone/ iPod or use the included remote. Nothing fussy, which makes it a truly plug and play affair.

But the first thing you'll notice upon unpacking is the beautifully crafted curved and sustainably sourced birch wood front of the speaker system. I'd argue 50% of the reason anyone would consider purchasing this speaker dock system over a Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin Air (more expensive, but includes Airplay), Bose SoundDock (similarly priced), or any of the multitude of other audio docks would be the overall aesthetic House of Marley has designed around their speaker system...perhaps even more so than the audio performance itself.

Placed inside our midcentury-ish living room with its plentitude of rosewood and birch furniture, the House of Marley Get Up Stand Up Home Audio System blended into the room, a harmonious visual edition rather than a "look at me!" type of design that often plagues the category of speaker docks.

But of course how it sounds is really as important as how it looks, and that's where the 25 watts x 2 powered two 4.5-inch woofers and two 1-inch tweeters come into play, producing an overall sound just a notch under the more expensive Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin Air I normally listen to. Perhaps it's due to the close proximity between woofers, but there's a much more noticeable specific directional quality when compared to the Zeppelin Air.

Whether tested with the harmonious Americana tunes from The Avett Brothers or the musical tidal wave of Explosions in the Sky, the Get Up Stand Up performed admirably in overall balanced sound. And thankfully so, since there are no additional controls to fine tune the output. And if bass-heavy music is your preference, the system's dual 4.5-inch woofers are more than sufficient to shake small items off the shelf when pushed over into moderately loud territory (at least in our small living room).

The system does lose a few points for not offering any wireless audio options, so we're hoping a future version will incorporate Bluetooth or Airplay connectivity, an increasingly desired feature in the era of digital audio.

Overall the House of Marley Get Up Stand Up Home Audio System was a surprise performer. The system sounds great, looks even better, and it's good to see a company sourcing materials with sustainability in mind, making the Get Up Stand Up Home Audio System a stand out choice in the crowded speaker dock category.

Pros: Very tasteful, decor-friendly birch wood design, sustainably sourced materials, two 4.5-inch woofers and two 1-inch tweeters produce overall pleasant sound in small to medium size rooms.

Cons: No Airplay built-in, easy to lose small remote, iOS device only docking (includes additional audio cable for connection with other audio devices).

Succession Planning: The Good, The Bad, The Promising - What ...

SPBy Kelli Bennett

The thought of one day having to relinquish a prosperous business built from the ground up creates a great deal of apprehension in the minds of business owners. Among the glut of small business owners, 7 million companies are owned by members of the Baby Boomer Generation. As a majority of baby boomers nears the retirement age, it is no secret that a vast number of business analysts believe that within the next five years the influx of businesses on the market will lead to a large decline in business values. This decline will be caused by a rush of baby boomer owned companies on the market.?

The term ?baby boomer? refers to the largest birth rate in U.S. history between the years 1954-1964.? According to History.com, 79 million babies were born during this decade after soldiers returned from World War II. Although they are largely characterized by their entrepreneurial panache, they are currently entering the final stage of the business life cycle where "follow-through" is of utmost importance: Succession planning.?

Baby Boomers' Options

Succession planning is not a fly-by-night endeavor. ?Depending on how well a business is managed, it can take two or more years of planning to implement a strong succession plan,? Roger Key, a High Net Worth Client Advisor, at SunTrust Bank, says.

Baby boomer business owners all ask themselves the same question: Who will take over my business once I retire? In a perfect world, the 40 percent of family-owned businesses expected to experience a leadership change in the next five years would easily transition into the hands of a adult child and/or grandchild. According to an article and study released by the U.S. Small Business Administration, things aren?t nearly perfect, and, in fact, less than one third of family businesses survive the transition from first to second generation ownership.

One of the most prevalent reasons the X and Y Generations are not comfortable with acquiring a business is due to apprehension, posits Key. The owners' heirs do not share the same amount of confidence in the current economy as was felt at the business?s establishment. Others are not interested in acquiring a business due to a lack of interest in the market or type of business. The worry of numerous loans and financial obligations also accompany this apprehension.?

Potential successors must also take into account the lifestyle changes that will inevitably occur. When inheriting a business, one inherits all of the staff, property and tax responsibilities as well. While the potential business profit may be appealing, this could quickly eliminate accustomed personal time.

Business transitions to family members mainly fail due to lack of business viability and planning. To avoid these issues and ensure a successful business transition Key believes the transition must start early. ?Owners should be very deliberate in how they train the next generation, and that training should include both financial and operational aspects of running the company.? ??

The U.S. Small Business Administration advises the execution of four separate plans:

Strategic Plan: This plan is detailed by each generation as they are given an opportunity to chart a course for the business as seen by them.?

Family Strategic Plan: This plan establishes policies for the family's role in the business. This plan is tailored to the specific family needs to avoid future conflicts.

Succession Plan: This plan will ease the founding or current generation's concerns about transferring the firm. It outlines how succession will occur and how to know when the successor is ready. This plan also includes recognizing potential leaders.

While accessing the results and feedback from the planning sessions, Cherly Cran, president of Synthesis at Work Inc., encourages managers and business owners to pay close attention to the company?s leaders of tomorrow. ?

Estate Plan: This plan will benefit a business owner?s heirs directly by ensuring the estate goes primarily to them instead of taxes.

When ?Plan ?Generation Ownership?? Fails

If reassurance and training do not sway family member?s transition decisions, baby boomer business owners have other options. These options include: Keeping the business into retirement years, selling the business through a third party or using of Employee Stock Ownership Plan or larger company, suggests Key.?

PRWeb advises business owners who plan on selling their companies to third-parties to standardize and document all company procedures,?investigate transferability of leases and sales and supplier contracts, secure key employees with employment contracts in order to establish a management team that can operate without the current owner. It is also advised that companies possess clean, verifiable financial statements for the past three or more years.?

A transition of this magnitude comes with both advantages and disadvantages that need heavy consideration by business owners. According to O?Hara & Company, the high probability that a business owner will receive immediate cash at the close of business transactions and equal treatment amongst the owner?s children are two advantages of selling to a third party.

Despite third-party promises, a business will undergo changes to its personality and culture. For those business owners interested in selling their business and still keeping the gains while ensuring business legacy, there is an option for them. Referenceforbusiness.com suggests that business owners serve on the company's board of directors in some capacity. This will ensure the values and traditions are still observed after the transition.?

These owners may also be interested in ESOP, which is used by 11,000 U.S. companies, according to the National Center of Employee Ownership. Business owners use ESOP to create a ready market for their shares. The business owner has the option of keeping their shares in the company as well.

Importance of Financial Records, Experienced Management Team and Perfect Timing

Regardless of the transition selected option, business owners cannot transition alone and must ensure accurate financial records. ?The deal falls apart when the buyer determines that the target company?s financial statements are incomplete or unreliable.?This example demonstrates the absolute necessity of good financial records. It can make or break a business sale,? Key cautions.

The IRS recommends small business owners to keep financial records of gross receipts; purchases; expenses; travel, transportation, entertainment and gift expenses; assets and employment taxes.? Purchase records should also include the cost of all raw materials or parts purchased for manufacturing finished products. The IRS reminds business owners that if travel, entertainment, gift or transportation expenses are deducted, certain elements of expenses should be substantiated.? ?

The figures used to complete these separate records are complied through purchases, sales, payroll, and other transactions including sales slips, paid bills, invoices, receipts, deposit slips and canceled checks.

All companies should also have a summary of your business transactions. Regardless of the field of business, it is imperative that business owners should always double check the type of records required for federal tax purposes to avoid possible delay or penalty.?

An investment manager is vital in successful business transition; they can provide market perspective and develop alternative sale options that help meet the seller?s long-term objectives. Where a sale to a competitor seems best, an adviser can develop competing proposals before contacting the competition. This protects the seller?s market and pushes the competition into a higher bid, says James A. Fitts, CFP director, wealth counseling; and Marshall G. Rowe, president and CIO, both of Harvest Capital.

Some small business owners also call on highly skilled financial advisors, such as Key. According to a 2011 survey Cerulli Associates/Phoenix Market International survey, 31.4 percent of high net worth clients utilize financial advisors services to maintain lifestyle after retirement and 9.8 percent use services to leave estate to heirs. Business succession planning falls under these main categories.

As those business owners nearing retirement analyze numbers and various studies, they realize this extensive planning process is not to be taken lightly. They must take into account all of the possibilities when planning the future of their companies. AT

Amazing artworks done with ballpoint pen

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, TODAY

They're breathtaking pictures -- a lovely red-headed young woman, a green-eyed housecat, a?peaceful?temple garden in Japan. But they're not photographs -- they're copies of photographs done with that most prosaic of artistic instruments, the simple ballpoint pen.

VianaArts

Samuel Silva's "Redhead Girl" is drawn with ballpoint pen and based on a photograph of model Love Ansimov by Russian photographer Kristina Tararina.

Attorney Samuel Silva, 29, who lives in Portugal, is earning a lot of attention recently for his amazing pen artworks, which are displayed online. He uses BIC pens in eight?different colors to do his work, which is so well done that?some visitors to his webpage don't believe he actually did the work, and want him to post a video of himself drawing.

Silva notes of "Cat Face" that "the original size is about the same as two credit cards, a very small drawing. I always try to squeeze as much quality in it as I can though."

"When people doubt something or don't like it, all they have to do is move on and forget it, continue with their lives, that's what I do," Silva told TODAY. "Why would it be possible to create photo-realistic drawings and paintings with any other medium in existence and not with ballpoint pens?"?

Silva says "Bald Eagle" took eight hours to finish, and calls it "just another quick doodle."

Silva notes on his webpage that he doesn't mix or blend the colors, but cross-hatches them in layers "to create the illusion of blending and the illusion of colors I don't actually have.?

He jokes on the webpage that his drawings take "forever," and tells TODAY that "to me, 'forever' is 50 hours over a period of two months. That's a long time!"

Domestic and wild cats are among Silva's chosen images, and he admits a drawing called "Tiger" is his favorite. "I do love felines of all kinds," he said.

Silva says "Tiger" might be his favorite drawing, and that he loves felines and always wanted to draw a tiger. "This one is wild, that's why I love it," he says. "Big felines are not meant for zoos." It took him 20 hours to draw.

Silva?told TODAY that?BIC hasn't contacted him, but if they did, "I'd ask them to make a bigger set of colors, because ballpoint-pen artists and enthusiasts around the world would certainly buy them."

What do you think of Silva's work??Can you believe he only uses ballpoints??Tell us on Facebook.

    Nutrition tied to improved sperm DNA quality in older men: Healthy micronutrient intake linked to reduced DNA fragmentation

    ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? A new study led by scientists from the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) found that a healthy intake of micronutrients is strongly associated with improved sperm DNA quality in older men. In younger men, however, a higher intake of micronutrients didn't improve their sperm DNA.

    In an analysis of 80 healthy male volunteers between 22 and 80 years of age, the scientists found that men older than 44 who consumed the most vitamin C had 20 percent less sperm DNA damage compared to men older than 44 who consumed the least vitamin C. The same was true for vitamin E, zinc, and folate.

    "It appears that consuming more micronutrients such as vitamin C, E, folate and zinc helps turn back the clock for older men. We found that men 44 and older who consumed at least the recommended dietary allowance of certain micronutrients had sperm with a similar amount of DNA damage as the sperm of younger men," says Andy Wyrobek of Berkeley Lab's Life Sciences Division.

    "This means that men who are at increased risk of sperm DNA damage because of advancing age can do something about it. They can make sure they get enough vitamins and micronutrients in their diets or through supplements," adds Wyrobek.

    Wyrobek conducted the research with a team of researchers that includes Brenda Eskenazi of the University of California at Berkeley's School of Public Health and scientists from the University of Bradford in the United Kingdom. They report their findings in the August 27 online issue of the journal Fertility and Sterility.

    Their research comes as more men over 35 have children, which raises public health concerns. Previous research conducted in Wyrobek's lab found that the older a man is, the more he's likely to have increased sperm DNA fragmentation, chromosomal rearrangements, and DNA strand damage. Older men are also more likely to have increased frequencies of sperm carrying certain gene mutations, such as those leading to dwarfism. These findings help explain why aging men are less fertile and are predicted to have more chromosomally defective pregnancies and a higher proportion of offspring with genetic defects.

    But until now, researchers haven't understood whether diet can protect against the detrimental effects of aging on the sperm genome.

    The scientists studied a group of about 80 men between 20 and 80 years old with an average age of 44. They were recruited several years ago as part of the California Age and Genetic Effects on Sperm Study when Wyrobek was at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Each man who participated in the study filled out a 100-item questionnaire that estimated their average daily vitamin intake, both from food and supplements.

    In addition, their sperm DNA quality was assessed via a lab analysis in which a voltage gradient pulls broken DNA strands from intact strands within the sperm nucleus.

    Each volunteer's intake of a micronutrient was classified as low, moderate, or high based on how they compared to other participants. The median daily intake, both from diet and supplements, was 162 milligrams for vitamin C, 23.7 milligrams for vitamin E, 2,586 micrograms for ?-carotene, 475 grams for folate, and 12.3 milligrams for zinc. Many participants, even those who reported to be healthy, consumed much less than the recommended dietary allowance for many of the micronutrients.

    The scientists analyzed the data several ways and came up with the same result each time: A diet high in antioxidants and micronutrients may decrease the risk of producing sperm with DNA damage, especially in older men.

    Why this is so isn't a mystery. Antioxidants scavenge reactive molecules that cause oxidative damage to cells. Studies have shown that dietary supplementation with antioxidants and increased consumption of antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables can decrease the amount of oxidative DNA damage.

    Based on their results, the scientists believe this same protective mechanism may also be at work in the reproductive tract of older men.

    "The different response of the old and young men presents new opportunities for health care, especially for older men planning families," says Wyrobek.

    More research is needed, however. Although the scientists found a clear link between higher vitamin intake and improved sperm DNA quality in older men, they don't know whether this link extends to male fertility and the health of offspring.

    "Our research points to a need for future studies to determine whether increased antioxidant intake in older fathers will improve fertility, reduce risks of genetically defective pregnancies, and result in healthier children," says Wyrobek. "The research also raises a broader question beyond sperm DNA: How might lifestyle factors, including higher intakes of antioxidants and micronutrients, protect somatic as well as germ cells against age-related genomic damage?"

    Aleppo's ancient city a victim of Syrian war

    ALEPPO, Syria (Reuters) - Ruled successively by Hittites, Greeks, Romans and Ottomans, Aleppo's ancient city has survived violent change over thousands of years. But the modern weaponry of Syria's escalating civil war is proving too much.

    The stone walls are pockmarked with bullet holes, whole houses have fallen after air strikes, and small wooden doors decorated with metal filigree are cracked from explosions.

    For a month, rebels armed with assault rifles and grenades have battled President Bashar al-Assad's army along Aleppo's cobbled streets. Troops have used tanks, helicopters and jets to shoot, blast and bomb their positions.

    "Every day there is fighting in Aleppo's Old City. Yesterday a jet bombed twice. The helicopters fire on us and there are mortar bombs every day," said rebel fighter Ahmed Hanesh, a 19-year-old student from the old district of Jedeide, standing guard at the edge of the Old City.

    Even before the fighting, time had forced houses made of stone and wooden beams to lean under their own weight and Aleppo's ancient mosques are crumbling. But the new scars are prominent. "How can we protect the old houses? We have to protect ourselves first," said Hanesh, his green head band and ammunition jacket popular attire for rebels who see themselves as the protectors of civilians from Assad's feared militia, the shabbiha.

    Further into the Old City, the streets taper. Families with young children walk in the opposition direction with their possessions - refugees fleeing pitched battles.

    A teenage boy holding a mattress over his head warns that further in it is not safe: "There is destruction in there," he says, before scurrying after his mother.

    Where tourists once marveled at Aleppo's preserved madrassas and ancient markets - imagining themselves in an Arabian Nights fantasy - now fighters stand at every corner with their weapons placed on sandbag barriers. The tourist shops are shuttered, their famed green olive soap locked up; an industry ruined.

    The aroma of home-made perfume and spice markets has been replaced with the smell of stone dust, chipped out into the air by shrapnel and bullets.

    Rebels and government troops here fight street by street. Enemies position themselves only meters away from each other as the ziz-zag alleyways grant some protection from a direct line of fire. They know Aleppo's stone buildings will take the blows.

    CATASTROPHE

    Aleppo's Old City is one of several locations in Syria declared world heritage sites by UNESCO, the United Nations cultural agency, which are now at risk from the fighting.

    "It's a catastrophe. Aleppo is thought to be one of the oldest towns in the world and a crossroads for some of the region's most important historical developments," a UNESCO representative told Reuters in Paris.

    "It's extremely important symbolically and we're really very worried."

    UNESCO believes five of Syria's six heritage sites - which also include the ancient desert city of Palmyra, the Crac des Chevaliers fortress, and parts of old Damascus - have been affected.

    Crac des Chevaliers, an almost intact crusader castle perched on a mountain in central Homs province, repelled waves of medieval offensives but was no match for modern explosives. Video footage has shown what appears to be damage from mortar or artillery to its 13th century battlements.

    Worried by the risk of looting at archaeological sites, UNESCO has contacted Interpol and neighboring countries to halt any smuggling of artifacts.

    "Of course the main priority is protecting civilians, but Syria's heritage is also extremely important, because it's part of the country's identity," the UNESCO representative said.

    "Past experience with Iraq for example has shown just how much damage can be caused to a peoples' identity," he said, citing the looting of the Baghdad antiquities museum after the 2003 U.S. invasion to overthrow Saddam Hussein.

    RELIGIOUS COHERENCE BROKEN

    Baghdad's museum was ransacked within days of Saddam's overthrow, an early sign of the chaos which eventually plunged Iraq into sectarian war.

    In Aleppo, rebels now claim control of roughly half of the Old City, mostly to the east. Government forces and shabbiha control the main souk, the main Ummayad mosque and Aleppo's biggest prize: the citadel.

    From a safe distance, the half-kilometer-wide (500-yard) medieval fortress can be seen rising above the city. Its huge wooden gates were broken into by shabbiha and now its immediate surroundings are a no-go area.

    Residents say snipers have positioned themselves in the thin stone windows, first carved out for archers. Today's snipers are precise and they shoot on sight, residents say.

    And civil war between a president who comes from a minority Alawite offshoot of Shi'ite Islam against a largely Sunni Muslim majority has broken the delicate sectarian balance of the Old City, where religious groups lived side by side for centuries.

    Saeed Ali, another young rebel in Jedeide, says that residents of Aleppo's Christian quarter have sided with Assad. "All the Christians volunteer to fire Kalashnikovs against us," he said, kicking spent bullet cases which lie idle on the road.

    "The Old City's Kurds are with Assad, too. Even the women fight," he said.

    Sunni residents say their own sect's treasures are being deliberately targeted. Ahmed Ibrahim, an electrician who also works to maintain one of Aleppo's 14th Century Mamluk mosques, says Assad stirred up sectarian tensions to promote the idea that he is fighting extremist terrorists.

    Ibrahim said that over the weekend a jet dropped a bomb a couple meters from the main minaret. The limestone walls held strong but the prayer hall was damaged. The cool interior, sheltered from the August sun by its domed roof, was full of broken glass and debris.

    Further down the road, another mosque was not so lucky. One bomb missed, leaving a 3-metre deep crater in the street. The next one hit the mosque, causing a bus to flip over, and the cemetery to crack open, its marble tombstones bowing over from the shockwave.

    As Ibrahim spoke a government fighter jet flew overhead at 300 feet, firing on a nearby district. The Old City dweller took refuge in a nearby alcove.

    "Jews, Christians and Muslims know that God is watching them," said Ibrahim, a pious man who keeps a well-cut beard and wears long robes. "Assad has forgotten."

    Scientists investigating artificial intelligencebased traffic control, so we can only blame the jams on ourselves

    Ever found yourself stuck at the lights convinced that whatever is controlling these things is just trying to test your patience, and that you could do a better job? Well, turns out you might -- at least partly -- be right. Researchers at the University of Southampton have just revealed that they are investigating the use of artificial intelligence-based traffic lights, with the hope that it could be used in next-generation road signals. The research uses video games and simulations to assess different traffic control systems, and apparently us humans do a pretty good job. The team at Southampton hope that they will be to emulate this human-like approach with new "machine learning" software. With cars already being tested out with WiFi, mobile connectivity and GPS on board for accident prevention, a system such as this could certainly have a lot of data to tap into. There's no indication as to when we might see a real world trial, but at least we're reminded, for once, that as a race we're not quite able to be replaced by robotic overlords entirely.

    How to Attract and Keep Clients with Facebook Groups : Real Estate ...

    One of the most basic strategies for improving email newsletter conversion is segmentation: breaking your list down into relevant groups, and then creating targeted content for that audience.

    That narrow focus can give you double-digit percentage bumps in your conversion rate. So, if it works so well for email, will work with your Facebook audience?

    Great question, right? Well, the answer is yes. It will work.

    How to Create a Facebook Group

    Fortunately, it?s pretty simple to set up a Facebook Group. Here are the steps:

    • Login into your Facebook Page.
    • Land on the Home page.
    • Navigate to the left column.
    • Click on ?Create a Group.?

    Voila! You are done. Now you just need to do that two more times. Let me show you what I mean.

    Open Groups: Finding New Clients

    An open Facebook Group is just that: open to anyone to join. But there is a secret to creating a lively and engaged Group. If you are appealing to a large audience, then it?s going to be messy and unweildly.

    Or it may be unresponsive.

    Instead, you need to tighten up your focus. Center the Group around a niche. This doesn?t have to business related. For instance, it could be ?Seattle Classical Music Lovers? or ?Austin Marathon Runners.?

    A business related Open Group could be ?Austin Minimalist Lifestyles? or ?Seattle Bungalow Addicts.?

    Member-Only Groups: Networking with Past Clients

    The member-only group is how you can create a close-knit community of people. Give them personalized, private messages and content and in return they?ll give you focused feedback, input and even referrals.

    The members of this club have exclusive access to you and your team. Other members can help other members, too. \

    Closed Groups: Supporting Current Clients

    This group is really just another members-only?except this time the members are your current clients. When you segment this way you end up cutting down on clumsy email clutter, and get to centralize all your information.

    Unlike the members-only group, people can see who is in this group. They just can?t see what is being shared. Questions and comments and thoughts shared do not go public, making your clients feel comfortable to share?and not have what they share end up on someone else?s stream.

    You can share documents in this group, announce new listings, events and closings. This gives a lot of people an opportunity to celebrate successes, and help others through certain failures.

    New home owners, for example, can ask experienced home owners advice about how to navigate through particular obstacles.

    Conclusion

    Segmenting your Facebook Groups will lead to more productivity and profitability. It really is worth biting the bullet and setting up segment-centric groups inside Facebook.

    10 Years After

    Image
    10 years after the Senior year graduation party, it felt surreal after Honey opened a letter.
    In it was an invitation for their High School Reunion.
    It was also the last night she was with her closest friends.
    It wasn't a secret that they've drifted apart.
    Especially after Emily had passed away.
    They promised they'd keep in touch but everything else was too much to bear.
    School, exams, part time jobs and student loans were just too much.
    Of course, they also met new people.
    They've drifted apart...

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Hi, when you opened this post I knew you were expecting that it is just one of those usual realistic posts.
    Well it might be, but I plan to make this one work.
    This is a story about high school friendship and 10 years after. Most of them have jobs, maybe some of them still in school- specializing into something like law or medicine or engineering.
    So after 10 years, they received a letter. An invitation to their high school reunion.
    This RP is inspired by a few movies: The Grown Ups, Romy and Michelle's high school reunion and etc.
    But no- it won't be a comedy alone. There's also regrets and undisclosed rifts to be fixed.
    So after the reunion, one of them decided to rent a house for the weekend for their group alone.
    This will only be for the weekend so duh, it will only be for 2 nights and 2 days.
    Come Sunday afternoon, they'd all go back to their usual lives (married, single or just plain working).
    But the story doesn't end there. The reunion brought back heart aches, rekindled friendships and fueled rifts.
    *Note: One of their friends, Emily died after a 2 years. During the night of their graduation party they were all in one vehicle and met an accident- leaving Emily with an amputated legs and damages. Making everyone guilty for her death.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~

    The RP is open for suggestions.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~
    I plan to keep this small. Probably 4 to 5 characters tops?
    Of course I demand passionate and dedicated RPers, I want to keep it clean so I require literate RPers.
    Come meet the Romans this Bank Holiday at Wroxeter ...
    Date: Sunday 26 & Bank Holiday Monday 27 August 2012
    It was founded as a military garrison, but soon came to be one of the largest civilian cities in the whole of Britain, and this August bank holiday weekend, a Roman family will move into the Town House at Wroxeter Roman City to give visitors a taste of civilian life in second century Virconium!
    A household of re-enactors from the Roman Military Research Society will leave their weapons at the gate as they settle into their new home in Wroxeter, the Roman Town House. The family and their slaves will be living in the house for two days to give visitors an impression of what Roman life would have been like away from the more commonly featured military.
    Meet the Romans at Wroxeter Roman City
    ?When we opened the Roman Town House, for the first time it gave visitors a real sense of just how grand and how big the city would have been ? the ruins highlight some areas like the bath-house, but it is only when you see the height and colour that you get a real feeling for what Wroxeter might have looked like,? says site manager, Mary Wycherley. ?Having a real Roman family living in the house will enable visitors to question different aspects of life in the city, from dealing with the unpredictable British weather to how they would welcome guests into their home.?
    One of the rooms at the front of the Roman Town House is set up as a shop, from which the merchant would have sold his goods. During the ?Meet the Romans? weekend, the retail facility will be occupied by a cobbler making shoes for the citizens and an armourer making ringmail, a precursor of the mail vests more commonly seen in medieval re-enactments.
    The event runs each day from 11.00am to 5.00pm, with the site itself opening an hour earlier at 10.00am.
    Admission prices are ?6.50 for adults, ?5.80 for concessions and ?4.20 for children, or ?17.10 for a family ticket (two adults and up to three children). English Heritage members receive discounted entry of ?1.50, ?1.30, ?1.20 and ?4.10 respectively.
    (AP) ? Hollywood may have run out of summer hits, but an anti-Obama documentary is helping to fill the gap.
    Holdover movies easily topped the weekend box office again, led by Sylvester Stallone's "The Expendables 2" at No. 1 for the second-straight weekend with $13.5 million.
    The weekend's new wide releases were overshadowed by "2016: Obama's America," which expanded from limited to nationwide release and took in $6.2 million to finish at No. 8.
    The documentary is a conservative critique of what the country would look like four years from now if President Barack Obama is re-elected.
    Released by Rocky Mountain Pictures, "Obama's America" nearly matched the $6.3 million debut of the No. 7 movie, Joseph Gordon-Levitt's action tale "Premium Rush," a Sony release that played in more than twice as many theaters as the Obama documentary.
    The weekend's other new wide releases opened weakly. Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell's road-chase comedy "Hit & Run," released by Open Road Films, debuted at No. 10 with $4.7 million, and the Warner Bros. fright flick "The Apparition" opened at No. 12 with $3 million.
    The weak openings are typical of late August, a dumping ground for movies without much audience appeal as the summer blockbuster season winds down and young viewers switch to back-to-school mode.
    But with less competition from Hollywood releases, it also opens the door for surprise successes such as "Obama's America."
    "It's extremely rare for a documentary to break into the top-10, but August can be a land of opportunity for smaller films," said Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com. "Also, there's the fact that this is a very conservative film. Normally, it's Michael Moore-branded documentaries, the liberal documentaries that make all the money."
    "Obama's America" opened in a handful of theaters in mid-July and did strong business as it gradually widened to more cities. It jumped into the top-10 this weekend as it expanded into 1,091 theaters, leading all other wide releases with an average of $5,717 a cinema.
    That's a solid average, especially for a political documentary. But it pales next to the king of political documentaries, Moore's George W. Bush assault "Fahrenheit 9/11," which opened at No. 1 with $23.9 million in June 2004, averaging $27,558 in 868 theaters. "Fahrenheit 9/11" went on to become the top-grossing documentary ever with $119.1 million domestically.
    "Obama's America" is based on the book "The Roots of Obama's Rage," written by Dinesh D'Souza, who co-directed the movie with John Sullivan.
    The documentary now has climbed to a $9.1 million domestic total, with prospects for strong business as the Republican National Convention unfolds over the next few days.
    D'Souza said Sunday that "Obama's America" will expand to more cities in the coming weeks and probably remain in theaters until early October, likely followed by a DVD release in the homestretch leading up to the Nov. 6 election.
    Conservatives probably account for most of the documentary's audience so far, D'Souza said. But as with "Fahrenheit 9/11," which drew many conservatives out of curiosity, the attention "Obama's America" now is receiving could prompt left-leaning viewers to check it out, he said.
    "What's happening is that people are really hungry for new information about Obama. There really is this sense that he remains an elusive figure," D'Souza said. "Then there's a second sense that the American dream is in the balance, the American dream is at stake, and that gives people a sense of anxiety about where the country is going."
    Released by Lionsgate, "The Expendables 2" raised its domestic total to $52.3 million after two weekends.
    In limited release, IFC Films' "Sleepwalk with Me" had a huge debut with $77,400 in a single New York City theater. Produced and co-written by Ira Glass of National Public Radio's "This American Life," ''Sleepwalk with Me" stars writer-director Mike Birbiglia in a semi-autobiographical story of a stand-up comic struggling with career and romance, along with bad bouts of sleepwalking.
    Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.
    1. "The Expendables 2," $13.5 million ($18.5 million international).
    2. "The Bourne Legacy," $9.3 million ($9.4 million international).
    3. "ParaNorman," $8.5 million.
    4. "The Campaign," $7.4 million.
    5. "The Dark Knight Rises," $7.2 million ($15.3 million international).
    6. "The Odd Life of Timothy Green," $7.1 million.
    7. "Premium Rush," $6.3 million.
    8. "2016: Obama's America," $6.2 million.
    9. "Hope Springs," $6 million.
    10. "Hit & Run," $4.7 million.
    ___
    Estimated weekend ticket sales at international theaters (excluding the U.S. and Canada) for films distributed overseas by Hollywood studios, according to Rentrak:
    1. "The Expendables 2," $18.5 million.
    2. "The Dark Knight Rises," $15.3 million.
    3. "Brave," $14.6 million.
    4. "Total Recall," $13.8 million.
    5 (tie). "Prometheus," $11.7 million.
    7. "Ted," $9.5 million.
    Pat Robertson Shuns Adopted Children of Sexual... | Gather
    Pat Robertson has long been a mouthpiece for the religious zealots of the United States, as well as those who are dead against abortion in any case -- even in cases of rape and incest. Now the televangelist moron is making comments against children of abuse, warning parents not to adopt them. So what does this mean for those who follow the guy? Well if you're still following this man and his far-out ideals, you're part of the problem.
    Orphanages are already overflowing with unwanted children as it is, and many of them are sadly victims of sexual abuse. The number of abused children in the United States alone reaches as high as 3.3 million children -- and those are only the statistics of reported incidents. Approximately five children die per day in the United States at the hands of an abusive person. The number of children in foster care in the U.S. needing homes surpasses the number of abortions performed in the United States. There are over 400,000 children in foster care in the United States and that number grows every year. The number of abortions in the year 2010 and 2011 didn't surpass 300,000. The far right and ultra religious zealots like Pat Robertson often demand that women give their children up for adoption instead of abort, but what happens when those children become victims of abuse?
    Studies have indicated that children in foster care are at higher risk of experiencing abuse both sexual and non sexual than not being in foster care. So to hear that Pat Robertson pretty much hates child abuse victims is enough to make any sane person's skin crawl. Pat said the following about child victims of abuse:
    "A man doesn't want to take on the United Nations, and a woman has all these various children, blended family, what is it - you don't know what problems there are. I'm serious. I've got a dear friend, an adopted son, a little kid from an orphanage down in Columbia. Child had brain damage, grew up weird. And you just never know what's been done to a child before you get that child. What kind of sexual abuse has been, what kind of cruelty, what kind of food deprivation, etc. etc. You don't have to take on somebody else's problems. You really don't. You can help people - we minister to orphans all over the world, we love helping people. But that doesn't necessarily mean that I'm going to take all the orphans around the world into my home."
    So this is straight out of the mouth of one of the pro-life movement's biggest messiahs. Do his followers feel the same way? If they're still listening to him and watching him, then most likely.
