Reverse Innovation Gives a Glimpse Into the Future

Reverse InnovationI?ve had a review copy of Reverse Innovation: Create Far from Home, Win Everywhere?by Vijay Govindarajan (@vgovindarajan) sitting on my book pile for about a month or so.? When I read the overview for the book, I could feel my small business bias coming out.? I don?t know about you, but there is a part of me that resents all these case studies featuring big global brands with big budgets and a population of employees that rivals a small country giving me advice or insight as to how I should run my small business. ?I am not a global brand, I don?t have infinite amounts of money to spend on the necessities ? let alone innovation and there?s no chance that I?m going to be doing any innovating in some far flung country.

So why should I read this book and why should YOU read this book?

Read Reverse Innovation for the Insights on Trends

One big reason for digging into this rather academic and intellectual book is to get a glimpse into the trends that will be hitting your small business in the next few years.? When I put my prejudice against multi-nationals to the side, I begin to see that Reverse Innovation is really a bellwether of things to come.

First, let me explain what the term ?reverse innovation? is.? In the past, big companies would do their innovating here in the United States and then, after making some adjustments, launch that innovation to the world.?? Reverse innovation takes that model and turns it upside down.? The authors, Vijay Govindarajan and Chris Trimble did some research and found that by innovating abroad, you actually increase your chances of success worldwide.

How the Book and the Concept Got Their Start

In 2008, Jeffrey Immelt, then CEO of GE chose Govindarajan to advise them on innovation.? This should tell you something if you know that GE only likes to be in the #1 slot of any market.? Given that commitment, it?s no surprise that they are always on the lookout for new ways to do this.

As Govindarajan set out to transform GE?s strategies, he interviewed the thought leaders insight some of the best brands in the world which include: Pepsico, Logitech and P&G.?? What he learned was that technology was not the primary stumbling block in developing innovations, rather it was a function of mindset and organizational structure.

What his research showed was that companies can earn the same or better return on their investments if they launch their innovations in low cost countries such as China and India rather than in highost countries such as the US.

The Three Fears That Keep Us From Taking Advantage of Reverse Innovation

The book discusses three fears that have kept big brands from practicing reverse innovation:

  1. Fear of low margins
  2. Fear of brand cannibalization
  3. Fear of losing technological leadership

When you read the book, you?ll see the answers to all of these questions as they pertain to large corporations and brands.? But the lesson for small business is that it?s our own mindset about where innovation should happen that holds small business back from really competing in a global marketplace.

In other words, US businesses suffer from a touch of xenophobia when it comes to innovation.? And I can see why.? We could easily let go of our manufacturing because it was ?manual labor? but to send our innovations and ideas abroad could mean literally losing our competitive advantage.

Reverse Innovation will ease your fears about that.? Govindarajan encourages businesses to open up to new possibilities of innovation that can transform ideas that require too much money into completely feasible products and services.

Who Should Read Reverse Innovation?

This book is an ideal read for anyone who likes reading about big global companies and what they are doing to keep their business and their brands alive. (Visit Govandarajan?s blog where he writes about his research and reverse innovation in general.)

As a small business owner (no matter the size of your business), you?ll want to check into this book to see how you might be able to apply these principles to your own innovation plans.

Overall this is a serious book.? It?s not entertaining, or engaging ? it?s informative and educational.? If you are involved with customers or companies who have multiple locations and technical facilities that span the globe, you will certainly want to read this and see if you can apply some of these concepts.

Reverse Innovation, may not be at the top of your reading list today ? but you can expect to see the trends and applications of this work become more the norm in the next few years.? The businesses who are familiar with this process will find themselves better prepared for the future.

A serial killer who set up a torture chamber in his truck and kidnapped mostly female hitchhikers across the United States has admitted murdering a newlywed couple in Texas, according to reports.

Robert Ben Rhoades --?already serving a life sentence for the death of a 14-year-old girl in Illinois --?this week pleaded guilty in?West Texas to killing Patricia Candace Walsh and her husband Scott Zyskowski, both in their 20s, the Desert News reported.

Prosecutors had agreed not to seek the death penalty in exchange for the pleas and Rhoades,?65,?was given two life sentences, the News said.

The paper said?Rhoades, a long-haul truck driver,?was the subject of the book "Roadside Prey" by Alva Busch.

In his?cab was "a type of dungeon with handcuffs on the ceiling,"?the News reported. In 1996, the Tucson Weekly, citing officials,?said it?was believed that Rhoades?had been killing an average of three women a month by the early 1990s.

The Associated Press reported the couple, from Seattle,?were hitchhiking to Georgia to preach the Christian gospel, when they took a ride from Rhoades near El Paso, Texas in early 1990.

FBI spokeswoman Shauna Dunlap said investigations concerning Rhoades were continuing.

ADHD is over-diagnosed, experts say

ScienceDaily (Mar. 30, 2012) ? What experts and the public have already long suspected is now supported by representative data collected by researchers at Ruhr-Universit?t Bochum (RUB) and University of Basel: ADHD, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, is over-diagnosed. The study showed that child and adolescent psychotherapists and psychiatrists tend to give a diagnosis based on heuristics, unclear rules of thumb, rather than adhering to recognized diagnostic criteria. Boys in particular are substantially more often misdiagnosed compared to girls.

These are the most important results of a study conducted by Prof. Dr. Silvia Schneider and Prof. Dr. J?rgen Margraf (both from RUB) and Dr. Katrin Bruchm?ller (University of Basel) as reported in the periodical Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology.

Daniel has ADHD, Danielle doesn't

The researchers surveyed altogether 1,000 child and adolescent psychotherapists and psychiatrists across Germany. 473 participated in the study. They received one of four available case vignettes, and were asked to give a diagnoses and a recommendation for therapy. In three out of the four case vignettes, the described symptoms and circumstances did not fulfil ADHD criteria. Only one of the cases fulfilled ADHD criteria based strictly on the valid diagnostic criteria. In addition, the gender of the child was included as a variable resulting in eight different case vignettes. As the result, when comparing two identical cases with a different gender, the difference was clear: Leon has ADHD, Lea doesn't.

Male and conspicuous: the "prototype" makes the difference

Many child and adolescent psychotherapists and psychiatrists seem to proceed heuristically and base their decisions on prototypical symptoms. The prototype is male and shows symptoms such as motoric restlessness, lack of concentration and impulsiveness. In connection with the gender of the patient, these symptoms lead to different diagnoses. A boy with such symptoms, even he does not fulfil the complete set of diagnostic criteria, will receive a diagnosis for ADHD, whereas a girl will not. Also the therapist's gender plays a role in the diagnostic: male therapists give substantially more frequently a diagnosis for ADHD than their female counterparts.

Diagnostic inflation, more medication, higher daily doses

In the past decades the diagnoses ADHD have become almost inflationary. Between 1989 and 2001, the number of diagnoses in German clinical practise increased by 381 percent. The costs for ADHD medication, such as for the performance-enhancer Methylphenidate, have grown 9 times between 1993 and 2003. The German health insurance company, Techniker, reports an increase of 30 percent in Methylphenidate prescriptions for its clients between the ages of 6 and 18. Similarly, the daily dosage has increased by 10 percent on average.

Remarkable lack of research

Considering these statistics, there is a remarkable lack of research in the diagnostic of ADHD. "In spite of the strong public interest, only very few empirical studies have addressed this issue," Prof. Schneider and Dr. Bruchm?ller point out. While in the 70s and 80s a "certain upswing" of studies on the frequency and reasons for misdiagnoses could be observed, current research hardly examines the phenomena. The current study shows that in order to avoid a misdiagnosis of ADHD and premature treatment, it is crucial for therapists not to rely on their intuition, instead to strictly adhere to defined, established diagnostic criteria. This is best possible with the help of standardized diagnostic instruments, such as diagnostic interviews.

Scientists at the University of Guelph have found a way to successfully clone American elm trees that have survived repeated epidemics of their biggest killer Dutch elm disease.

The breakthrough, published today in the Canadian Journal of Forest Research, is the first known use of in vitro culture technology to clone buds of mature American elm trees.

"This research has the potential to bring back the beloved American elm population to North America," said Prof. Praveen Saxena, a plant scientist who worked on the project with Professor Alan Sullivan. Both are from Guelph's Department of Plant Agriculture.

"It may also serve as a model to help propagate and preserve thousands of other endangered plant species at risk of extinction across the globe."

Majestic American elms were among the most popular and recognizable trees in Ontario, lining boulevards and adorning city centres. But more than 95 per cent of the population in Eastern Canada and the United States has now been wiped out by Dutch elm disease.

The imported fungal infection interferes with water transport and stops nutrients from circulating in the tree. Only about one in 100,000 elms may be naturally resistant to the pathogen.

Looking for new techniques to clone and produce resistant trees through micropropagation, the Guelph researchers selected tissue samples from survivors in Ontario, including a century-old elm tree growing on the U of G campus.

"The trees that have survived initial and subsequent epidemics potentially represent an invaluable source of potential disease resistance for future plantings and breeding programs," Saxena said.

After growing genetic copies from the shoot tips and dormant buds, the researchers hope to select germplasm with the desired traits including disease-resistance which will further aid elm breeding and biotechnology programs around the world.

They also perfected a way to conserve germplasm over the long term. A germplasm repository now contains 17 accessions collected from mature elm trees that survived across Ontario.

"Our results demonstrate the usefulness of in vitro technologies for conserving and reintroducing endangered germplasm of economic, social and environment significance," Saxena said.

In vitro conservation technology is highly efficient and better than seed banks for conservation of many plant species, he added. Hundreds of genotypes with known phenotypes can be conserved in a safe small space and can easily be propagated.

The professors worked with Guelph postdoctoral researchers Mukund Shukla and Maxwell Jones; Chunzhao Liu, Professor, Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing; and Susan Gosling of the Gosling Foundation.

"We want to conserve and propagate the American elm and many other rare and endangered Canadian native species so that we can start to replace what has been decimated along the way," said Gosling.

Saxena said the team hopes to reintroduce disease-resistant trees. "The need to conserve endangered plant species in provinces such as Ontario where urban sprawl continues is crucial and urgent."

Food Poisoning's Hidden Legacy

Image: Ted Morrison

Colette Dziadul struggled for years to understand her daughter?s joint problems. Dana, who is now 14 years old, complained from toddlerhood that her knees and ankles hurt. The aches kept her up at night, made her wake her parents to ask for painkillers and forced her to sit out school sports. Nevertheless, two pediatricians and an orthopedist diagnosed the problem as ?growing pains? that would fade as she grew older.

Then, when Dana was 11, Dziadul participated in a survey about foodborne illness. The questionnaire came from an organization called Safe Tables Our Priority (now STOP Foodborne Illness), which was canvassing survivors of outbreaks for details of their recoveries. When she was three years old, Dana had spent two weeks in the hospital?one of 50 people sickened after eating cantaloupe that had been contaminated with Salmonella. Among the complications of infection that the survey listed were symptoms of a form of joint damage known as reactive arthritis.

Dziadul was dumbfounded. She found Dana a rheumatologist, who confirmed that the pain was caused by arthritis for which there was no other explanation. Then she went back into Dana?s medical records. On Dana?s 10th day in the hospital a nurse had recorded that the youngster was limping and complaining of joint pain. Could those long-forgotten symptoms have been the first sign of arthritis, starting as her body reacted to the Salmonella infection? ?That there could be a connection between Salmonella and arthritis never crossed my mind,?
Dziadul says. ?And it never crossed most of the doctors? minds.?

It is a scary idea that food poisoning?which we think of as lasting just a few days?could instead have lifelong aftereffects. The incidence of such ?sequelae,? in medical parlance, has been thought to be low, but not many researchers studied the problem until recently. New findings by several scientific teams suggest the phenomenon is more common than anyone thought.

A Common Problem?
Foodborne disease has an enormous public health impact even if you count only the initial, acute episodes of illness. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated in 2011 that the U.S. sees 48 million illnesses, 128,000 hospitalizations and 3,000 deaths every year from foodborne organisms. (The European Union had 48,964 cases and 46 deaths in 2009, the most recent year tallied.) The U.S. Department of Agriculture?s Economic Research Service calculates the cost of foodborne illnesses just from bacterial infection to be at least $6.7 billion, counting medical care, premature deaths and lost productivity. Re?searchers who attempt to track chronic effects say that the actual bill is much higher.

?People don?t understand the full consequences of foodborne disease,? says Kirk Smith of the Minnesota Department of Health, which lends its investigators around the U.S. ?They think you get diarrhea for a few days and then you are better. They don?t understand that there is a whole range of chronic sequelae. And although any of them may not be common individually, when you put them together they add up to a lot.?

Long-term consequences are not limited to individuals who were hospitalized, as Dana was. They have also been recorded in people who experienced what seemed to be minor bouts of fever, vomiting or diarrhea. The consequences include reactive arthritis, urinary tract problems and damage to the eyes after Salmonella and Shigella infections; Guillain-Barr? syndrome and ulcerative colitis (a chronic bowel inflammation) after Campylobacter infection; and kidney failure and diabetes after infection with Escherichia coli O157:H7. Those organisms are very common: federal investigators have identified them in meat, milk, poultry, eggs, seafood, fruit, vegetables and even processed foods.

Beer Town: Five Seasons bourbon beer week | Drink: A beer, wine ...

Last year, Julian P. Van Winkle, the scion of Kentucky?s celebrated Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery, seemed perplexed but pleased when he told me that almost every day he gets an email from a craft brewer looking for old Pappy Van Winkle bourbon barrels to use for aging beer.

?I?d like to see the difference between, say, a Maker?s Mark barrel and a Pappy barrel aged with the same beer,? Van Winkle said. ?That would be fun to try.?

Recently, Crawford Moran, the brewer-owner of Five Seasons Brewing Co. on Atlanta?s Westside, took up Van Winkle?s challenge. Over five days (March 27-31), Moran will present the results of a grand bourbon beer experiment.

Crawford Moran

Crawford Moran

Moran filled five different bourbon and whiskey barrels ? Four Roses single barrel,?Jack Daniels Tennessee Whiskey, Evan Williams single barrel, Pappy Van Winkle 20 year and Old Pogue bourbon ? with a Belgian-style ale he dubbed ?Free Form Jazz Odyssey,? then aged each barrel for six months.

?We were very fortunate to be able to get hold of a Pappy Van Winkle 20 year barrel,? Moran said. ?We knew we had to do something fun. We went back and forth on which of our beers to fill it with. But it?s amazing how when you add beer to the creative mix, things can grow out of control. The idea kind of grew and grew until it exploded into this project.?

A staunch but mischievous beer advocate, Moran said he started with this question: ?If bourbon were good enough to be beer, what would it be??

In brewing a beer that would take on the flavors of the barrels, Moran decided the challenge was to do something that would have enough character to be exciting. But he also wanted a beer that would ?showcase the barrels, their subtleties and nuances, and be able to reflect the individual bourbon or whiskey.?

?The Jazz Odyssey has the beautiful deep copper color of bourbon? Moran said. ?We also tipped our hat to bourbon mashes by adding a bit of corn. It?s the same beer aged for the same amount of time and conditioned the same way, so the only real differences are with the barrels.?

Moran?s tasting notes reveal how various degrees of char and the addition of grains, such as wheat or rye, in the bourbon or whiskey originally aged in each barrel create distinct aromas and flavors in the beer.

He describes the Four Roses barrel as spicy, the Jack Daniels as fruity, the Evan Williams as straight-ahead bourbon, the Pappy Van Winkle as round and smooth, the Pogue as smoky.

?The Pappy barrel we got was filled in 1991,? Moran said. ?It?s amazing to think about that barrel sitting there for 20 years. I think about what I was doing in 1991. A lot has changed. That?s almost half my life.?

In addition to the barrel-aged beers, Five Seasons will feature food and cocktail specials each night.

Some of mixologist Ronnie LeClair?s creations include a Bourbon Bacon Flip (Evan Williams Single Barrel, bacon syrup, farm egg, cream soda, lemon and candied bacon), and a Sazerac (Old Pogue, Herbsaint, Peychaud?s bitters, sugar cube and flamed lemon peel).

Richmond hires finance deputy | Richmond Times-Dispatch

By: ROBERT ZULLO | Richmond Times-Dispatch

Richmond has hired a new deputy chief administrator to oversee the city's Finance Department.

Sharon Judkins, who previously worked for the city for 19 years, was introduced to the City Council at Monday's informal meeting.

Judkins will earn $163,000, said Tammy D. Hawley, a spokeswoman for the mayor's office. She replaces Eric M. Tucker, who resigned last fall after six months. Judkins has more than 25 years of leadership and executive management experience and "is noted for her expertise in financial planning, organizational development and performance-based management," according to a city news release.

She started work Monday.

Judkins last worked as chief administrative officer of the Santa Clara Valley Water District in San Jose, Calif. There she had an array of management responsibilities, including budget and financial planning; human resources and labor relations; information management; corporate business services, including contract administration and procurement; fleet services; and the ethics and Equal Opportunity programs, according to the news release.

Judkins earned a bachelor's degree in history/political science from Virginia Union University and a master's in human resources development with a focus on organizational development from George Washington University.

"Sharon Judkins' accomplishments and comprehension of government finance and management reforms will prove to be a tremendous resource as we continue to position ourselves to become a tier-one city," Mayor Dwight C. Jones said in the statement.

Meanwhile, the City Council tabled for two weeks a measure that would have created a director of Animal Care and Control position with a salary range of up to $143,263.

The council voted in 2010 to eliminate the former Department of General Services, part of a cost-reduction plan by the mayor's office, and allow Animal Control to be its own department after a debate over where it fit best in the city's agencies.

A study conducted by the city administration later determined Animal Control would function best as its own entity and would require a director, as other city departments. The position, which will have a salary range of $90,786 to $143,263, would allow the administration to better manage overpopulation of animals and improve public education and the "public image" of animal control, said Christopher L. Beschler, deputy chief administrative officer for public utilities.

The office is currently managed by Chuck Marchant, who holds the title of operations manager. Fred Rosen, a division chief in the city's Human Resources Department, told council members Monday that Marchant is now being paid $96,198 to run Animal Control. He will be eligible to apply for the director job once it is advertised.

The Animal Care and Control office has 23 positions and a planned budget of about $1.3 million for the fiscal year that starts July 1. The office operates a public shelter, investigates animal cruelty complaints, issues licenses, enforces rabies laws, picks up stray or vicious animals, and conducts adoptions and lost and found services.

Councilwoman Reva M. Trammell asked that the proposed ordinance be continued, saying she had fielded questions from angry residents about the city establishing a new executive position while facing a $24 million school funding gap school and other budget challenges.

Council President Kathy C. Graziano and other council members said the council had effectively already decided to create the position when it voted to make Animal Control its own department.

Councilman Bruce W. Tyler, who opposed creating a department, said Monday's discussion on the director position was two years too late.

"If we put this department in Public Utilities, Public Works or the Police Department, we wouldn't be having this discussion," Tyler said. "The reality of what we're doing is we're increasing the operating cost of this department."

James Cameron dive launches race to the bottom of the world (+video)

Before James Cameron made a solo dive to the Challenger Deep ? the deepest point in the ocean ? only one mission had been there before. Now, several groups are planning deep-sea dives, and engineering advances could shed new light on the region.?

Film director and explorer James Cameron on Monday completed a historic solo dive to the Challenger Deep ? the deepest spot in the ocean ? aboard an oversized torpedo of a submersible that expedition scientists say could help open new opportunities for researchers to study some of the most remote places on the planet.

Skip to next paragraph National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence James Cameron completed a record-breaking dive to the lowest point of the Mariana Trench. See scenes as Cameron's sub, DEEPSEA CHALLENGER, resurfaced, and Cameron emerged from the pilot's capsule around noon, local time (10 p.m. ET March 25th).

The pioneering design of Mr. Cameron's Deepsea Challenger, as well as those of other groups who plan similar manned deep-sea dives later this year, may lead to a new generation of manned and unmanned subs that could accelerate the pace of research generally, other specialists say.

Cameron returned to the surface at noon local time some 300 miles southwest of Guam after enduring nearly seven hours tucked in a cramped cockpit so small he could not fully extend his legs. He spent nearly three hours at the Challenger Deep itself, gathering 3-D video.

He also had planned to gather samples of rocks and marine life. But a hydraulic leak rendered the sub's mechanical arm and claw useless, he explained during a post-dive press briefing.

With no way to gather samples, a planned six-hour stay on the bottom was cut in half.

It took him just over 2-1/2 hours to reach the Challenger Deep and a mere 70 minutes to reach the surface once his time on the bottom ended.

While there, he says he took a page from astronauts' experiences and made sure he took time to savor the view ? the otherwise deep, black water illumined by banks of LED lights along the sub's hull.

?I just sat there looking out the window, looking at this barren lunar plain and appreciating it,? he told reporters, following the trip, which was funded by the National Geographic Society, Rolex, and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.

Cameron's trip marks first solo dive to the Challenger Deep, and only the second visit by humans. In 1960, the US Navy sent the submersible Trieste and its two-man crew to the bottom there.

More trips are in the offing this year by various groups aiming to take people into the Challenger Deep or other parts of the Mariana Trench. These efforts include Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Oceanic sub, which like Cameron's Deepsea Challenger, is a single-seater. Several of the marine scientists who have worked with Cameron also are working with Mr. Branson's group.

Although deep-sea trenches make up only about 1 percent of the sea floor, they are of keen scientific interest. They form as old, dense oceanic crust, long ago made by lava welling up along mid-ocean volcanic ridges, now is pushed beneath more-buoyant continental crust.

Trans Health Talk ? HealthyHeels

Trans folks are those whose gender identity, expression, or behavior is not traditionally associated with their birth sex. Some trans individuals experience gender identity as incongruent with their anatomical sex and may seek some degree of sex reassignment surgery or hormonal treatments. Others may pursue gender expression through external self-presentation and behavior. In honor of National GLBT Health Awareness Week (March 26th-30th), I give you:

5 Things Trans Persons Should Discuss with their Healthcare Provider

(Compiled from info provided by the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association [GLMA] and the Centers for Disease Control [CDC])

Hormones

Hormone therapy may give desirable effects for those who are transitioning, but it also carries risks. Estrogen may cause blood clotting, high blood pressure, elevated blood sugar and water retention. Testosterone carries the associated risk of liver damage. Some trans persons bypass the health care system by using injectable silicone, often administered by non-medical persons, instead of injectable estrogen. Silicone used in this manner may actually migrate in the tissues and cause disfigurement years later. Hepatitis may also spread through the use of shared needles. The CDC recommends that hormone use be monitored by the patient and provider. Utilizing the health care system not only ensures safety in hormone therapy use, but also regulates the dosage of hormone use so that the desired effects can be obtained.

Cancer

Trans men who have not had surgical removal of the uterus, ovaries, or breasts are still at risk to develop cancer of these organs. Trans women are at risk, although low, for cancer of the prostate. Even if your gender identity or expression do not coincide with your internal reproductive organs, it is important not to neglect their health.

STDs and Safe Sex

Risky behaviors may be high among trans persons, according to multiple HIV/AIDS trans needs assessments. Behaviors that may put persons at risk for contracting an STI include having multiple sex partners and irregular barrier method contraceptive use. Trans folks also face stigma and discrimination, which exacerbates their STI/ HIV risk, since the stigma of a trans status is associated with lower self-esteem, increased likelihood of substance abuse and survival sex work in male-to-female trans individuals, and lessened likelihood of safe sex practices.

Alcohol and Tobacco

Due to the social isolation, unemployment and other factors affecting trans folks, feeling of depression and anxiety may lead to alcohol use. Alcohol combined with sex hormone administration increases the risk of liver damage, while risk of heart attack and stroke are increased in those who smoke tobacco and take estrogen or testosterone.

Fitness (Diet & Exercise)

Many trans folks work long hours in order to cover the medical costs of transitions, which insurance often does not cover. Exercise and proper nutrition are important however, especially prior to sex reassignment surgery as they will reduce a person?s operative risk and promote faster recovery.

Some people may be reluctant to share the details of any previous transitioning they have undergone when seeking a new health care provider. The GLMA suggests that trans folks share their medical and health history with their medical providers in order to allow their medical personnel to provide the best possible and most relevant care.

If you identify as trans, intersex or genderqueer and would like to connect with others that do or continue to have discussions relevant to trans health, check out the UNC Chapel Hill LGBTQ Center in SASB North 3226, check out their website at http://lgbtq.unc.edu/index.php/home.html, and attend their Trans Talk Tuesdays from 6:15-7:15pm at Open Eye in Carrboro on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month.

DUBLIN?(BUSINESS WIRE)?Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/4ddfa0/the_outlook_for_ph)
has announced the addition of the The
Outlook for Pharmaceuticals in Latin America report to their
offering.

The
Outlook for Pharmaceuticals in Latin America

The region needs to increase drug access, in spite of intensifying
cost-containment measures. Therefore, attractive opportunities for
(bio)pharmaceutical producers exist in Latin America. Brazil has the
largest pharmaceutical market. Strong economic performance will fuel
pharmacy sales growth in the forecast period. Mexico is the second
leading market. Recent regulatory developments will create further
market opportunities in the country, particularly for generic producers
in both the private and public sectors. In Argentina, the pharmaceutical
industry is expected to perform well in the coming years, with strong
growth in production, sales, exports and employment. Pharmaceutical
companies, however, are encouraged to act in smaller Latin American
markets to maximise their full regional sales potential.

Generics consumption in Latin America is low, with the exception of
Brazil which has a dynamic bioequivalent generic sector. In the last two
years, foreign producers have penetrated what, until then, had been
considered a tough sector due to local protectionism and low prices.

Food & Drink | Put Your Crockpot To Work During The Cold Winter ...

If getting from your car to your door seems like a march through the tundra during cold winter days, a trip to the grocery store may be excruciating to think about. You may be entertaining thoughts of staying in your nice warm car and driving through a fast food place for dinner instead. But, that sort of impulse can really defeat a grocery budget, even though the nice warm car is tempting.

How can you feed your family a nice hot meal without suffering those icy cold trips? By planning one shopping day with one goal in mind - creating enough crockpot meals for at least one whole week. Let's see how this can be accomplished.

You'll want to gather up your favorite crockpot recipes, picking a variety of dishes so your family doesn't get tired of the same old food. Make a grocery list that includes everything you need for the week based on the recipes you've chosen. Check your pantry for the standard supplies, too. Now do all your shopping for the week.

When you get home, carefully wrap and freeze the meat for the meals later in the week, chop up all your veggies for each meal and seal in containers. You are well on your way to a week of cozy meals without having to venture out in the cold. Here we go.

Sunday: Begin the week with a wonderfully aromatic Rotisserie Chicken. Your crockpot will produce a nice, crispy and juicy chicken just like a deli rotisserie. Make it a Sunday dinner by including your garlic mashed potatoes and steamed broccoli.

Monday: A Crockpot French Dip Roast is an easy way to serve a hot and satisfying sandwich for dinner. It may be just a sandwich, but it sure seems more like a meal when you use a good, hearty hard roll and add mozzarella cheese on top.

Tuesday: Time to spice things up a bit with a hearty Mexican Chicken meal. You control the spice, so this meal will satisfy everyone's tastes. Spoon generous portions over some hot rice, and no one walks away hungry. You may have enough leftover chicken from Sunday for this dish.

Wednesday: This is your night to go meatless with a fabulously rich Minestrone Soup. You could replace the beef broth with chicken broth if you choose, but, as is, this is a frugal meal that will please even your staunchest meat eater.

Thursday: Time to surprise your family with a Crockpot Turkey Breast dish that is wonderfully tangy and sweet. The turkey simmers in a beautiful sauce made with cranberry and onion. It looks and tastes incredible.

Friday: One day of the week is always busier than the rest. You'll be glad to have a refrigerator full of leftovers for that day. Arrange your leftovers on the counter with plates, bowls, and silverware, and have your family line up. It's Smorgasbord time!

Saturday: The races are on TV and we're not budging. So, when it comes time to eat, putting a platter of Pulled Pork Sandwiches on the table and having everyone help themselves, is a great way to enjoy the races and fill our tummies without missing a moment of the action.

Sunday: A quiet day at home, topped off by an incredible Tangy Chicken dinner is a day to remember. Gather the family around the table and see their faces light up when you uncover a platter of juicy chicken surrounded by colorful pineapple, green pepper, and carrots swimming in a bed of tangy sauce.

Stocking up and preparing for a week's worth of meals ensures that you have a house full of food for your family. But, equally as important, when your family finally gets home in out of the cold, they will walk into a house fragrant with the savory aromas of a delicious dinner ready to enjoy. Give this plan a try for one week and I guarantee you won't miss those stops at the drive-thru for a moment!
