We all know Benjamin Franklin as a forefather of our country, scholar, inventor, philosopher and Nobleman. Many of our modern day conveniences are attributed to his work. I discovered self- improvement was at the center of Mr. Franklin?s work. I was reading a book this weekend that outlined his program. This is the earliest introduction to NLP I have ever seen.
Mr. Franklin considered there are thirteen weeks in a quarter. Then four quarters. He would take thirteen self-improvement words and focus on one word a week. Studying it, meditating on it, writing down the dictionary definitions, he would focus on that one word all week. Then at the end of the quarter he would start over again, digging deeper to come to a conclusion of exactly what that word meant to him.
Here are the words Benjamin Franklin found most relevant.
1. Learning: you can never know everything, so continue your education through your life.
2. Mistakes: everyone makes mistakes, you just have to learn from them and not repeat them. A mistake does not have to be yours to learn from it.
3. Self-Esteem: Probably the most important word, trait, attribute of them all.
4. Good Health: When you have your health you have everything. When you don?t it is all you want.
5. The Golden Rule: Everyone has heard it, very few practice it. Your challenge is to practice it daily.
6. Honesty: First you have to be honest with yourself, brutally honest. Only then can you be truly honest with others.
7. Positive Mental Attitude (PMA): By repeating a desired outcome consciously, you program your subconscious to make it happen.
8. Goal Setting: Ben recommended setting a balanced set of goals in the following seven areas of your life, Spiritual, Mental, Physical, Family, Business, Financial, and Social.
9. Self-Discipline: Is the key ingredient to effective goal setting.
10. Responsibility: We all need to take total and complete responsibility for our lives.
11. Flexibility: Trees are perfect examples for us in life, demonstrating how we must be firming yet flexible.
12. Patience: Many times we have to wait for what we want; God and life seem to have their own pace.
13. Thankfulness: By remaining thankful, before your desires are fulfilled reinforces Positive Mental Attitude.
Benjamin Franklin used this formula all his adult life. By taking these words and contemplating their meaning to you, gives us our first NLP guru. Who knew?
