  • Chondritic meteorites are made of the stuff that formed the planets, moons, asteroids and comets. Each chondrite group has its own distinctive textural and compositional characteristics.
  • From these properties, the author and other scientists have inferred roughly the locations where the chondrite groups formed and the relative amount of dust present in those regions.

I pity Astronomers. They can see the objects of their affection?stars, galaxies, quasars?only remotely: as images on computer screens or as light waves projected from unsympathetic spectrographs. Yet many of us who study planets and asteroids can caress pieces of our beloved celestial bodies and induce them to reveal their innermost secrets. When I was an undergraduate astronomy major, I spent many a cold night looking through telescopes at star clusters and nebulae, and I can testify that holding a fragment of an asteroid is more emotionally rewarding; it offers a tangible connection with what might otherwise seem distant and abstract.

The asteroidal fragments that fascinate me most are the chondrites. These meteorites, which constitute more than 80 percent of those observed to fall from space, derive their name from the chondrules virtually all of them contain?tiny beads of melted material, often smaller than a rice grain, that formed before asteroids took shape early in the solar system's history. When we examine thin slices from chondrites under a microscope, they become beautiful to behold, not unlike some of the paintings by Wassily Kandinsky and other abstract artists.

Analysis: Apple earnings need to overcome technical malaise

NEW YORK/SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - To those who study technical stock charts, Apple Inc looks broken.

Even though it is widely viewed to be undervalued after hitting an 11-month low this week and nine out of 10 brokerages recommend that investors buy or hold the stock, Apple shareholders could still be in for more rough times if technical strategists are right.

They note that trading charts show few price points where investors can expect clusters of buying to support Apple's shares. For example, the stock's medium-term momentum, based on its 50-day rate of acceleration, has been on a downward slope since March, but has not hit over-sold levels.

Ryan Detrick, senior technical strategist at Schaeffer's Investment Research, said it is hard to find an entry point at current levels, calling the stock "broken."

"There's been a lot of technical damage, but at the same time it still looks like it's in a downtrend," Detrick said. "This could still be a name you want to avoid and could very well still underperform in our opinion."

Apple has a chance to turn things around when it reports results for the December quarter on January 23. Investors are unusually nervous because of reports that Apple might be curtailing purchases of screens for its iPhone and iPad, which together account for over 70 percent of revenue.

If Apple can substantially beat Wall Street's subdued expectations, that would go a long way towards restoring confidence in the near term. It is not enough for Apple to just meet targets - that could cause shares to fall further in the short term, some analysts say. Apple has only missed analysts' profit forecasts four times in the last 10 years, two of those in the most recent reporting periods.

"If you have a 10 percent to 15 percent beat on estimates, it will be enough to have people say, 'Oh my gosh, Apple has its game back,'" said Chris Bertelsen, chief investment officer of Global Financial Private Capital, a Sarasota-based wealth manager with $1.7 billion assets under management.

The fund had cut back its holdings in Apple to less than 1 percent of its portfolio from about 5 to 6 percent last fall, but Bertelsen said it is now adding again. He likes Apple's longer-term prospects as the global smartphone market grows, particularly in developing countries such as India and Brazil.

Analysts on average estimate Apple's fiscal first-quarter earnings per share at $13.41, down slightly from $13.87 in the year-earlier quarter. Revenue is seen up 18 percent at $54.7 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

The December quarter is typically the strongest one of the year for consumer electronics sales and Apple had a new product, the iPad mini, in its holiday season line-up.

Wall Street estimates Apple sold between 47.5 million and 53 million iPhones, up considerably from the 26.9 million sold in the previous quarter, when the iPhone 5 had not made it to all markets. IPad sales are expected at 23 million to 25 million.

BULLS OUTNUMBER BEARS

Apple shares have fallen nearly 30 percent after hitting a record high in September, in part on worries that its mobile devices are no longer as popular as they were. As competition intensifies from Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and others using Google Inc's Android software, investors are wondering if Apple's days of hyper growth are over.

There are still plenty of Apple bulls on Wall Street. Forty-eight out of 58 equity analysts who cover the stock rate it a "buy" or "strong buy" and another seven say it is a "hold," according to Thomson Reuters data. Only three recommend that investors sell the stock.

The median price target is $745, which is roughly 50 percent above Apple's Friday close of $500.

The company is expected to continue to post double-digit revenue growth into at least 2015 and a StarMine analysis of its expected growth over the next decade puts the stock's intrinsic value at about $708 a share.

"We still expect iPhone growth. They are still pointing to a strong December quarter and, if you think there's any momentum left, that they can grow on the high end (of the smart phone market) or find growth in other sectors, this is a buying opportunity," said Morningstar analyst Brian Colello, who has a fair value call on Apple at $770.

Investors also expect Apple to follow through on a promised $10 billion stock buy-back program.

"If the company is not buying back at this level, I think it's absurd and suggests that something is seriously wrong with the company," said Mark Mulholland, manager of the Matthew 25 fund, which has about 17 percent of its holdings in Apple.

Last year, the fund posted a considerable 29 percent gain, although it lost 2.8 percent in the last quarter as Apple slumped. (Apple shares gained 31 percent over 2012)

Mulholland values Apple at more than $1,000 per share, based on its growth prospects and cash level. Apple had cash and securities of $121.25 billion at the end of September, or about $129 per share.

Still, he agrees with technical analysts who say there is little momentum behind the stock. Some point to support near $425 per share, which means there is room for the stock to fall another 15 percent from current levels.

"Three things influence a stock price: growth, value and momentum. The growth and value are there, but you've completely lost your momentum," said Mulholland.

Apple shares are trading at 15.4 times projected 12-month earnings, a level that analysts say is unusually inexpensive for a company with its growth profile.

Samsung trades at a forward P/E of 7.6, while Nokia trades at 92.3 times.

Sandy Villere, portfolio manager of the $356 million Villere Balanced Fund, said the fund has been scooping up more shares as the price fell, but notes it is more fashionable to be down on the iPhone, iPad and Mac computer maker these days.

"It's becoming almost a contrarian thing to want to buy Apple shares," Villere added. It's "a great buying opportunity."

Studies provide insights into inherited causes of autism

Jan. 23, 2013 ? The most consistent finding of autism research lies in the revelation that the disorders are incredibly complex. Two new studies in the January 23 issue of the Cell Press journal Neuron that add to the growing appreciation of this complexity focus on identifying inherited genetic mutations linked with autism spectrum disorders. The mutations -- which are distinct from the spontaneous mutations that have been the focus of previous studies -- may provide valuable insights into the causes of autism.

"It's long been known that autism is a heritable condition and that some cases appear to run in families. Our studies are among the first to begin to address this heritable component," says Dr. Christopher Walsh of Boston Children's Hospital, who is the senior author of one of the papers.

Both groups sequenced the portion of the genome that codes for proteins, also known as the exome, in individuals with autism, their relatives, and controls. In one study, investigators focused on rare mutations that completely abolish the function of particular genes -- and therefore the expression of a protein. "We utilized new genome-sequencing technologies to discover a component of autism that can be traced to recessive inheritance -- that is, when a child inherits two broken copies of the same gene, one from each parent who is a carrier," explains senior author Dr. Mark Daly of Massachusetts General Hospital and the Broad Institute. "There were twice as many autism cases as control individuals that were apparently missing an important protein somewhere in the genome," he adds. Their findings suggest that 5% of autism risk is linked to inherited mutations that completely disrupt the functions of genes.

Like Dr. Daly and his colleagues, Dr. Walsh and his team identified and characterized cases of autism due to the inheritance of two gene mutations, one from each parent. In this work, though, the researchers found that the partial loss of a gene's function -- not only complete absence of function -- is linked to autism spectrum disorders. They identified several genes -- such as those involved in neurometabolic pathways -- that were not previously associated with autism risk, and they revealed a striking variability of autism severity despite inheritance of similar genetic mutations.

"These two studies firmly establish that recessive mutations contribute importantly to autism, not just in specialized populations but in the population at large," says first author Dr. Timothy Yu, of Boston Children's Hospital.

With follow-up work, identifying the various genes that are silent or partially disabled in autism cases can provide key clues to understanding the underlying biology of autism spectrum disorders and potentially help generate new therapies.

Man charged in shooting on Texas college campus

(Reuters) - A 22-year-old man has been charged in a shooting on a community college campus in Texas that left three people wounded, one critically, authorities said.

Carlton Berry was charged with aggravated assault following the shooting at the Lone Star College near Houston on Tuesday, and was being treated in hospital, said Harris County Sheriff's office spokesman Alan Bernstein.

The two people involved in the argument were treated in hospital, including a woman with student identification with a medical issue that was not a gunshot wound, authorities said.

A maintenance worker who had been standing nearby was shot in the leg.

No other identifications would be made at this time, Bernstein said

An ambulance dispatcher said his company had transported three people to local hospitals. One of them was in critical condition and the other two were in "urgent" condition, he said.

The shooting at the community college with some 10,000 students was the latest incident at a U.S. school since a gunman massacred 20 children and six adults in Connecticut in December.

The argument began as a verbal exchange and escalated to shooting, authorities said. A handgun was involved but no other information was given about the weapon.

The Lone Star College System is the largest institution of higher education in the Houston area, according to its website. Student enrollment is 90,000 and there are six colleges in the system.

There have been three shootings at schools and colleges in the United States in the past two weeks.

On January 10, a student armed with a shotgun critically wounded a fellow student at a high school in Taft, California, about 30 miles southwest of Bakersfield.

On January 15, a student armed with a pistol opened fire at Stevens Institute of Business & Arts in St. Louis, shooting a school employee and then turning the gun on himself.

Also on January 15, two people were killed and a third wounded when gunfire broke out in the parking lot of a community college in eastern Kentucky. Authorities said that shooting was a result of a domestic conflict.

Bloggers Put Chemical Reactions through the Replication Mill

Scrounging chemicals and equipment in their spare time, a team of chemistry bloggers is trying to replicate published protocols for making molecules. The researchers want to check how easy it is to repeat the recipes that scientists report in papers ? and are inviting fellow chemists to join them.

?We?re just a bunch of people who want to make the reactions work,? explains blogger See Arr Oh, who is based in the United States and prefers not to reveal his real name. The other team members include chemistry graduate student Matt Katcher from Princeton, New Jersey, and two bloggers called Organometallica and BRSM, who together have launched Blog Syn, in which they report their progress online.?

Among the frustrations he and others have experienced with the chemical literature, says See Arr Oh, are claims that reactions yield products in greater amounts than seems reasonable, and scanty detail about specific conditions in which to run reactions. In some cases, reactions are reported which seem too good to be true - such as a 2009 paper which was corrected within 24 hours by web-savvy chemists live-blogging the experiment; an episode which partially inspired Blog Syn. ?I never forgot that reaction,? See Arr Oh adds.?

?Ask any synthetic chemist what they spend most of their time on, and they will admit that it is getting literature reactions to work,? says chemist Peter Scott of the University of Warwick in Coventry, UK. ?That is the elephant in the room of synthetic chemistry.?

Blog Syn is one of several places where chemists can check synthesis know-how. The journal Organic Syntheses, for example, only publishes synthetic procedures that have been checked and verified by a member of its editorial board. Scott is involved in a separate project to compile a database of about 5,000 chemical procedures, called SyntheticPages, which is part of ChemSpider, an online database of chemical structures.? And the Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE) ? a peer-reviewed online journal that publishes videos of experiments ? will launch a chemistry channel on 4 February. That could help with one difficulty faced by some chemists: published chemistry reactions are written in a standard format that is supposed to make things easy to follow, yet unwritten tweaks are often needed to make experiments succeed in practice.

See Arr Oh says that Blog Syn is different to JoVE and SyntheticPages because those initiatives involve chemists refining and verifying their own chemical reactions. By contrast, Blog Syn intends to use crowd sourcing, meaning that outsiders ? chemists that the bloggers already know, to start with ? will check work that has already been published by others.

Test case
So far, the bloggers have investigated one reaction, which they picked because it would be especially useful if it were easy to replicate; it uses an iron and sulphur catalyst to make ring-shaped molecules containing oxygen and nitrogen. Following the published method, the team couldn?t get as much of the final product as the original authors did. ?It does indeed work, but we?re not positive yet what factors the authors have that we don?t,? says See Arr Oh. One problem, the team's blogpost says, was that the written paper didn't make it clear how stringently they needed to exclude air from the reaction.

The chemists? online efforts reflect a growing focus across the sciences on the importance of being able to reproduce published procedures. One project, the Reproducibility Initiative, was set up last year to enable researchers to have their study ?validated? by outside checkers. Another, the Reproducibility Project, is dedicated to estimating the reproducibility of psychology experiments. The director of that project, social psychologist Brian Nosek of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, thinks that Blog Syn will work only if chemists can be rewarded for participating.

See Arr Oh accepts that funding Blog Syn will be the challenge to developing it on a larger scale. He is exploring ways to make the blog easier to manage, including crowd-sourced funding methods such as the website Kickstarter. Until then, he will continue to check reactions in his spare time. ?At the moment these reactions are done at night under cover of darkness,? he says.
