Kerry calls Turkish PM's Zionism comments 'objectionable'

Secretary of State John Kerry on Friday criticized a comment by Turkey's prime minister likening Zionism to crimes against humanity, as the disagreement cast a shadow over talks between the NATO allies.

Kerry, on his first trip to a Muslim nation since taking office, met Turkish leaders for talks meant to focus on the civil war in neighboring Syria and bilateral interests from energy security and Iran's nuclear program to counter-terrorism.

But the comment by Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan at a U.N. meeting in Vienna this week, condemned by his Israeli counterpart, the White House and U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, has clouded his visit.

"We not only disagree with it, we found it objectionable," Kerry told a news conference with Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, saying he raised the issue "very directly" with Davutoglu and would do so with Erdogan.

Erdogan told the U.N. Alliance of Civilizations meeting in Vienna on Wednesday: "Just as with Zionism, anti-Semitism and fascism, it has become necessary to view Islamophobia as a crime against humanity."

The Turkish prime minister's caustic rhetoric on Israel has in the past won applause from conservative supporters at home but raised increasing concern among Western allies.


Kerry said Turkey and Israel were both key U.S. allies and urged them to restore closer ties.

"Given the many challenges that the neighborhood faces, it is essential that both Turkey and Israel find a way to take steps ... to rekindle their historic cooperation," Kerry said.

"I think that's possible but obviously we have to get beyond the kind of rhetoric that we've just seen recently."

While on a visit to Turkey, Secretary of State John Kerry spoke out about the violence in Syria. He has pledged to send Syria $60 million in non-lethal aid and Syrian opposition leaders are asking for secure humanitarian quarters through which aid can enter the country. NBC's Catherine Chomiak reports.

Washington needs all the allies it can get as it navigates the political currents of the Middle East, and sees Turkey as a key player in supporting Syria's opposition and planning for the era after President Bashar Assad.

Ties between Israel and Turkey have been frosty since 2010, when Israeli marines killed nine Turks in fighting aboard a Palestinian aid ship that tried to breach Israel's blockade of the Gaza Strip.

"If we must talk about hostile acts, then Israel's attitude and its brutal killing of nine of our civilian citizens in international waters may be called hostile," Davutoglu said, adding Turkey had always stood against anti-Semitism.

"No single statement carries a price higher than the blood of a person ... If Israel wants to hear positive statements from Turkey it needs to reconsider its attitude both towards us and towards the West Bank," he told the news conference.

Turkey has demanded a formal apology for the 2010 incident, compensation for victims and their families and for the Gaza blockade to be lifted. Israel has voiced "regret" and has offered to pay into what it called a "humanitarian fund" through which casualties and relatives could be compensated.

Support for Syrian opposition
Erdogan appeared displeased when Kerry arrived late for their evening talks, remarking there was not much time left, according to a U.S. pool reporter who attended the picture-taking session at the start of the meeting.

Kerry, in turn, apologized, saying that he had a good meeting with Davutoglu, according to the pool reporter.

Erdogan, speaking through an interpreter, replied that they "must have spoken about everything so there is nothing left for us to talk about." In a joking tone of voice, Kerry said: "We need you to sign off on everything."

Turkey's relations with the United States have always been prickly. And Erdogan's populist rhetoric, sometimes at apparent odds with U.S. interests, is aimed partly at a domestic audience wary of Washington's influence.

But the two have strong common interests. Officials said Syria would top the agenda in Kerry's meetings with Erdogan and President Abdullah Gul, building on the discussions in Rome between 11 mostly European and Arab nations within the "Friends of Syria" group.

After the Rome meeting, Kerry said on Thursday the United States would for the first time give non-lethal aid to the rebels and more than double support to the civilian opposition, although Western powers stopped short of pledging arms.

Turkey has been one of Assad's fiercest critics, hosting a NATO Patriot missile defense system, including two U.S. batteries, to protect against a spillover of violence and leading calls for international intervention.

It has spent more than $600 million sheltering refugees from the conflict that began almost two years ago, housing some 180,000 in camps near the border and tens of thousands more who are staying with relatives or in private accommodation.

Washington has given $385 million in humanitarian aid for Syria but U.S. President Barack Obama has so far refused to give arms, arguing it is difficult to prevent them from falling into the hands of militants who could use them on Western targets.

Turkey, too, has been reluctant to provide weapons, fearing direct intervention could bring the conflict across its borders.

The Plantronics Blackwire 720 ($149.95 direct) is a deluxe wired stereo headset for use with VoIP clients that doubles as a Bluetooth headset for cell phones. It's a good choice for outfitting desk-bound employees in a call center?one of Plantronics' original target markets, incidentally, before the company migrated to the consumer realm. It's also a solid pick if you just want something comfortable to wear at your desk all day.

The lightweight Blackwire 720 features a padded, perforated leather headband, plus two padded earcups. Each earcup can adjust down or up an extra inch or so, with little clicks that indicate various settings as you move up and down. A boom mic projects outward on a plastic stem; you can adjust its angle and position easily, again with click settings that are easy to push through. The earcups fold flat and store easily in the included carrying case, which is hard plastic but with a cloth covering and inside pocket to store the wire.

Inline on the black wire is a 3-inch remote control. The remote contains buttons to mute the microphone, adjust volume up or down with a sliding rocker switch, and two buttons to answer or end calls from a PC or a cell phone, respectively.

Installation on a PC is simple; simply plug the headset into a free USB port, and download Plantronics' free Spokes software from the company's website. The Spokes software makes controlling calls from multiple sources easier. Spokes also installs a battery meter for the Blackwire 720 in your PC's icon tray, and updates your UC presence status whether you're on a mobile call or a PC call.

Pairing with a phone over Bluetooth works the same way as it does with a regular Bluetooth headset. The Blackwire 720 can detect when it's on your head and activates, the same way the Plantronics Voyager Legend Bluetooth headset does. The mobile talk button flashes blue and red when pairing, solid red when charging, and stays off when fully charged.

Simply put, this is one comfortable headset. It sounds great, too, at least through the headphones. In a series of Skype tests, voice quality was impressive overall, with a clear tone in the earpiece. In voice mail tests, I heard clear transmissions through the boom mic that didn't sound overly compressed or digitized, but they did sound a little thin and distant. I was completely intelligible, though. The same was true with cellular calls; I tested the Blackwire 720 paired with a Verizon Apple iPhone 5 and heard similar results in both directions.

One other downside: When using the Blackwire 720 as a Bluetooth headset, you still have the wire to deal with; it only detaches at the point of the inline remote. You can unplug it from the computer, since the Blackwire 720 has a rechargeable battery, but then you have to carry part of the wire with the headset. That makes this product for those who will use it all the time with a VoIP client as well as a cell phone; otherwise, you could get a stereo Bluetooth-only headset that's fully wireless (or a mono headset, for that matter).

There are certainly less-expensive options than the Plantronics Blackwire 720. But if you're using Skype or another VoIP system?which already saves you a ton of money when compared with a copper wire system?using a good headset will go a long way toward ensuring voice quality remains pristine in both directions. The Plantronics Savi 440 is a good wireless option that sits in one ear, if you'd rather have a headset in that style, and also has way more range than most Bluetooth headsets, although it's more expensive than the Blackwire 720.

Reprogramming adult cells to stem cells works better with one gene turned off

Mar. 1, 2013 ? The removal of a genetic roadblock could improve the efficiency of converting adult cells into stem cells by 10 to 30 times, report scientists from The Methodist Hospital Research Institute and two other institutions in the latest issue of Cell.

"The discovery six years ago that scientists can convert adult cells into inducible pluripotent stem cells, or iPSCs, bolstered the dream that a patient's own cells might be reprogrammed to make patient-specific iPSCs for regenerative medicine, modeling human diseases in petri dishes, and drug screening," said Rongfu Wang, Ph.D., Principal Investigator and Director of the Center for Inflammation and Epigenetics. "But reprogramming efficiency has remained very low, impeding its applications in the clinic."

Wang and his group identified a protein encoded by the gene Jmjd3 (also called KDM6B) as a roadblock in the stem cell conversion process. Jmjd3 is known to be involved in many biological processes, including the maturation of nerve cells and immune cell differentiation.

Wang and his team are the first to identify Jmjd3's role in inhibiting the reprogramming process. They found knockdown or deletion of Jmjd3 in young mouse fibroblasts was enough to greatly enhance reprogramming efficiency.

"Our findings demonstrate a previously unrecognized role of Jmjd3 in cellular reprogramming and provide molecular insight into the mechanisms by which the Jmjd3-PHF20 axis controls this process," said Helen (Yicheng) Wang, co-principal investigator.

In investigating Jmjd3 and its role in iPSC reprogramming, Wang's team found Jmjd3 has two previously unknown functions -- it helps regulate cell growth and cellular aging and Jmjd3 deactivates another nuclear protein, PHF20. The scientists learned during the study that PHF20 is required for cellular reprogramming, because cells without PHF20 failed to generate iPSCs.

"So when it comes to increasing iPSC yields, knocking down Jmjd3 is like hitting two birds with one stone," Rongfu Wang said.

Jmjd3 may not be the only genetic roadblock to stem cell conversion.

"Removal of multiple roadblocks could further enhance the reprogramming efficiency with which researchers can efficiently generate patient-specific iPSCs for clinical applications," Wang said.

U.S. Rules Climate Change Won't Be a Threat to the Keystone Pipeline ? and Vice Versa

Good news for environmentalists who might otherwise be lamenting the State Department giving initial environmental approval for the Keystone XL pipeline: The government determined that the pipeline itself won't be damaged by climate change.

The highly controversial pipeline, lambasted by critics as a tremendously risky project for the environment, won a key victory with the release of the State Department's draft environmental impact assessment by the State Department. Release of the draft report late this Friday afternoon kicks off a 45-day period of public comment. You can read the executive summary of the report here if you plan to comment ? and if the history of the proposal has taught us anything, it's that there will be a great deal of comment indeed.

At question is whether State should grant TransCanada, the Canadian firm hoping to build the pipeline, authorization to bring it across the U.S.-Canada border. TransCanada hopes to complete a route from the tar sands deposits of Alberta, Canada, down the middle of the country, and to the Gulf Coast. Proponents of the project tout the short-term job creation potential of such a major project, as well as the possible reduction of oil from Middle East if imports from Canada increase. Critics argue (generally in much stronger terms) that the project would substantially increase the use of an energy source that is much more carbon intensive than conventional oil sources ? setting aside concerns over the possibility of a spill. The worst on-land spill in American history resulted from the rupture of a tar sands pipeline in Michigan.

TransCanada's initial proposal for the pipeline brought the pipeline across an environmentally sensitive region of Nebraska, prompting even that state's Republican governor to experess concerns about the project. A revised plan from TransCanada changed the proposed route to largely avoid those regions, prompting the state to approve the project ? and removing a key reason for the State Department to nix the proposal.

As one would expect, the report is thorough. It notes that some 15,493 acres would be disturbed during construction ? an area of about 24 square miles ? and that the pipeline would cross over 1,000 bodies of water. It articulates the native species of plants and animals that would be effected by construction. And ? of most concern to environmentalists ? it considers how the project will affect and be affected by climate change. The project will create 240,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas while being built, and another 3.19 million metric tons each year thereafter ? a figure that is less than one percent of the emissions from the country's coal-fired power plants.

Perhaps the most ironic part of the report is its assessment of what damage the pipeline might see at the hands of climate change. After outlining what climate change is expected to bring to the United States (warmer temperatures, more wildfires, etc.), it notes:

The pipeline would be buried deep enough to avoid surface impacts of climate changes (freeze-thaw cycles, fires, and temperature extremes).

This will no doubt be a great relief to activists.

But, as with nearly every part of this hard-fought issue, the report released today isn't a clear cut victory for either side. The Washington Post notes that the report undermines one of the key economic arguments made by pipeline proponents.

[T]he detailed environmental report ? which runs close to 2,000 pages long ? also questions one of the strongest arguments for the pipeline, by suggesting America can meet its energy needs over the next decade without it. The growth in rail transport of oil from western Canada and the Bakken Formation on the Great Plains and other pipelines, the analysis says, could meet the country?s energy needs for the next decade, even if Keystone XL never gets built.

The on-going delay in construction of the pipeline has led to a significant over-supply of tar sands oil in Alberta, causing prices to plummet and, according to some analysts, threatening the long-term economic viability of the project. The State Department's analysis above offers another reason for pessimism: even if built, the market may not return.

Critics will also cite the report's determination that construction would create about 42,000 jobs ? but only 35 long-term.

To a large extent, today is only a sideshow to the main event, which will come with a final decision on the all-important cross-border permit. The State Department also indicated today that a final decision won't come until July or August. After all, the government needs to get through the 45 days of public comment the report requires ? and then further public comment on news shows and at protests and in Congressional offices every hour until a decision is made.

A Natural Particle Accelerator, Far Above The Planet

Far above the Earth's surface, two doughnuts of radiation surround the planet, charged particles zipping around in stable belts - that's the shape of them - and they were discovered in 1958 by James Van Allen and now bear his name. They are the Van Allen Belts.

But when researchers launched a satellite in 2012 to study them, just a few days after the satellite was brought online, scientists were treated to surprise: a third belt, which then joined the other two known belts but joined them only for about a month before that third belt was blown away, a puff - by a strong puff of solar wind, strange stuff, and showing just how little we know about our space environment.

It was really interesting research, and joining me now is Daniel Baker. He is director of the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado in Boulder and one of the authors of a paper in Science describing the phenomena. Welcome to SCIENCE FRIDAY.

DANIEL BAKER: Thank you very much for having me.

FLATOW: Surprising, was it?

BAKER: Very much, yes. As you noted, since their discovery over five decades ago, the textbooks told us there were two distinct Van Allen radiation belts. We always believed there was a stable inner zone and a highly dynamic outer zone separated by each other.

FLATOW: I remember learning - I remember one of my projects in seventh grade was studying an article, when I guess it was either Sputnik was up there, or Explorer, and they discovered the Van Allen Belts, and it was cutting a piece of - an article out of the New York Times and put it in a scrap book, but it was - that dates all the way back to that.

BAKER: That's right, yeah. The discovery was really made by Van Allen and co-workers with the Explorer 1 and then the Explorer 3, 4 and Pioneer missions in that time period of 1958 or so.

FLATOW: And how do you discover a belt with a satellite?

BAKER: Well, you really use very highly sensitive particle detection devices. You put them onto satellites. You fly the satellites through there. You make in situ observations, and you try to sort it all out. And that's what we did with the - you mentioned one satellite. It was actually two satellites, the dual satellite mission called the Radiation Belt Storm Probes, and they've now been renamed the Van Allen Probes Mission.

FLATOW: And so what do you actually see?

BAKER: What we saw was that when we first turned on our experiment about two days after launch, we saw the expected two-belt structure. We saw high intensity near the Earth, then a gap region, and then an outer belt. But just a short while after that, part of that outer dynamic belt was ripped away, and it left what we've called the Storage Ring for about four weeks, I think as you noted in your introductory remarks.

And we were so surprised by this. We thought our instruments must be wrong. But then we realized we build such good instruments that couldn't possibly be true. And we saw the same thing on both satellites. So we really thought this must be for real.

And then as you noted, about four weeks after that, a powerful solar storm came by and wiped out the entire outer Van Allen Belt for a while. So this is really quite exciting stuff. The sun really cooperated very actively for about a month and a half or two months.

FLATOW: So does that mean this is an area or a belt that comes and goes all the time?

BAKER: Well, we don't really know that. I would be very surprised in the last four and a half billion years if this hasn't happened before. But we've never really had the eyes in space to see this. We have better energy range, better time resolution, better spatial resolution, better energy resolution, than we've ever had before.

And as I say, to have two satellites that allow us to separate space and time is also very advantageous. So we're keeping our eyes open. We certainly haven't seen this in the five months since the launch except for this period of time that I report in the paper.

FLATOW: Yeah, so you're convinced, though, that it's not some artifact?

BAKER: Oh yes, we're very much convinced. In fact separate instruments - with 20/20 hindsight we've been able to go back and look at this in other instruments on the same spacecraft that we're on sort of sporadically. And we've seen hints from other satellites. But it was never seen as clearly as this, as we can see now, flying through the throat of the Van Allen Accelerator.

BAKER: Well, we sort of think that - we're getting ideas, and theoreticians, of course, are very excited by these kinds of results and are now coming out with many ideas. But it seems like it was, sort of, a Goldilocks scenario, in a way. There was a strong acceleration event. Part of the outer belt got ripped away by a solar disturbance that was just strong enough to tear away part of the outer belt, but not strong enough to completely annihilate the outer belt.

And then it was book-ended about the 30th of September, a much more powerful solar disturbance came by and really annihilated the entire outer belt. So it seems like it has to be a sequence, a special sequence of events in order for this to really occur and to be detectable for such a long period of time.

FLATOW: Was this - was there any bit of serendipity on this, that you were able to detect it?

BAKER: There absolutely was. That's a fascinating part of the story. We learned early in the summer of 2012 that a longstanding monitoring satellite called SAMPEX, the Solar Anomalous Magneto Particle Explorer, that had been sort of remotely sensing the radiation belt. So it was going to re-enter the Earth's atmosphere some time in the fall of 2012. So we went on a campaign to try to get our instruments commissioned much earlier. If we had followed the normal pattern of commissioning our relativistic electron proton telescope would have not been turned on until about 34 days after launch.

We pushed to turn on two days after launch, and it was precisely because of that that we were able to detect these things, see them and watch them in their full kind of glory for this entire period of time. If we hadn't had SAMPEX forcing our hand, we would have not turned on until after this was all over and we would have missed the very interesting story, to say the least.

FLATOW: That is - it seems that you got really lucky...

(LAUGHTER)

FLATOW: ...what other way to describe it.

BAKER: That's right.

FLATOW: How could the early explorers have detected the belt if you're using sophisticated satellites 50 years later? What were they doing that they could detect it?

BAKER: Well, they...

FLATOW: What did Van Allen do?

BAKER: Well, he was using pretty simple instrumentation, what are called Geiger tubes. You probably heard of Geiger counters that make very sort of broad-brush, fairly crude kind of measurements of radiation. They don't distinguish very clearly between different energies or different particles even. And today, we have much, much improved technology, very sophisticated instruments that can see with better spatial resolution, better temporal resolution and especially better energy resolution extending up to the very highest energies.

And so modern technology combined with flying spacecraft sort of in the right place and, of course, at the right time really helps us to do a far superior job to anything that's been done before.

FLATOW: Are you going to name this belt something?

BAKER: Well, as they say, we called it the storage ring. I was sort of motivated by looking at what's going on in ground-based laboratories, you know, ground accelerators and things like that. I don't know that we will do anything but maybe call it a third or a transient belt, but we'll have to see. We might have a naming contest or something.

FLATOW: Oh, we have one that came in already.

BAKER: Oh, what's that?

FLATOW: A tweet came in to us saying, you know, you made your discovery in the same week that Van Cliburn died, you know, the great pianist, maybe the Van Cliburn belt, since you have the Van Allen belt.

(LAUGHTER)

BAKER: Well, we'll take that under advisement, OK?

FLATOW: All right. 1-800-989-8255. Let's talk about why it's so important. Why do you spend the time, money and effort to send up these satellites to study the belts? Why is that so important?

BAKER: Well, the radiation in space is very important. All the satellites that we use in our sort of everyday life or that society uses for communication, for surveillance, for weather satellites, all the things that we take for granted today involving the space segment really involves satellites that fly through these regions. And so the more we understand about the space environment and especially understanding when the space environment is particularly hostile is very important.

We know many, many cases where satellites have suffered severe anomalies or even failures due to these Van Allen radiation belt particles. And so we're trying to understand this. And so we're very fortunate to be part of a discipline that has both fundamental astrophysical kind of benefits, you know, basic research benefit to understand this cosmic accelerator operating just a few thousand miles above our head, but we also have the duality there of studying things that have real societal relevance. And that's why it's kind of a fun discipline to be part of.

FLATOW: This is Ira Flatow on SCIENCE FRIDAY from NPR, talking with Dan Baker, University of Colorado in Boulder. Do these belts protect us from that radiation that's coming from the sun?

BAKER: Well, the magnetic field around the Earth very much protects us. We're under two very important umbrellas. One is the magnetic field of the Earth that sort of stands off the direct impact of solar energetic particles and the flow of the solar wind, and then the atmosphere also shields us. So when we're out in space, whether it's robotic spacecraft or humans flying out there that they can be pretty directly impacted by these high-energy charged particles. But we here on Earth are relatively protected, and we live in a very protective cocoon in a way.

FLATOW: Let's go to Dan in Fort Lauderdale. Hi, Dan. Welcome to SCIENCE FRIDAY.

DAN: Hi. How are you doing?

FLATOW: Hey there.

DAN: Thanks for taking my call. I just have a real quick question. I want to understand the shape of these, because when I think of the word belt, I think of like an asteroid belt, like, you know, the solar system-type track, you know? And so I was wondering if it's around the Earth and if it's like a sphere shape, like completely closed.

FLATOW: Good question.

BAKER: Yeah. It is a very good question. Actually, these are more like sort of doughnuts. I think Ira used that term before, or they're sort of like Tauruses around the Earth. And so belts suggest something quite thin and narrow, and these are really quite broad. They're like the Earth is enveloped in a couple of interlaced kind of inner tubes or something like that. It's much more Taurus-like rather than belt-like. It's just that name belt is a holdover from the earliest discoveries.

FLATOW: Hi there.

MICKEY: My question is it's regarding the two inner belts. What are their characteristics? What - why is it that they were less affected by the solar wind kind of puffing away this third belt?

FLATOW: Yeah. Good question.

BAKER: Yeah. That's a very good question too. And the outermost part of the system is really buffeted very strongly by the solar wind. As you get closer to the Earth, the magnetic field becomes much stronger. It's much more immune there to the external perturbations from the sun. And so the inner belt is very stable, very tightly held by the strong magnetic field, whereas the outermost fringes of the system can be buffeted very strongly by the solar wind flow.

FLATOW: Would you be more surprised now if you don't see another belt develop or if you do?

BAKER: I would be surprised. Now, that we have the clear eyes, the clear windows on this phenomenon, I'd be amazed if we don't see it, you know, again under the right circumstances. But what we don't know is how frequently these circumstances occur. And it probably takes the sun to cooperate, and we haven't been too fortunate lately to get the sun to do just what we want it to do.

FLATOW: Well, now that we're talking about it, of course, it will never happen again.

BAKER: Well, we hope we won't have the kiss of death for that.

Bigger jackpots? Florida to join Mega Millions game

Florida will start selling tickets to the popular Mega Millions game later this year.

Florida Lottery officials told The Associated Press on Thursday that the state will join 42 other states in selling tickets. Tickets will go on sale on May 15.?

The state already sells tickets to Powerball, another multistate game. It also has its own game called Florida Lotto.?

Lottery Secretary Cynthia O'Connell said retailers and lottery players have been asking the state to join Mega Millions for years.?

Lottery officials contend that adding Mega Millions will generate additional money for the state, despite past fears that adding games would erode sales of existing games.?

Last summer the Florida Lottery wrapped up the most financially successful fiscal year in its history, with sales of $4.45 billion.?

(AP) ? In his Olympic year, Oscar Pistorius steadily became an avid firearms collector, joining a gun-collecting club and purchasing a collection of firearms that included a .500 Magnum pistol dubbed by its manufacturer as "the most powerful production revolver in the world" and a civilian version of a military assault rifle.

At the end of 2012, in the first blush of his romance with Reeva Steenkamp, the model he later shot and killed, Pistorius got deeper into his hobby. It was known that Pistorius liked guns but only now, from Associated Press interviews with other collectors, is it becoming clear the extent to which he became a dedicated firearms aficionado in the 12 months before he shot Steenkamp.

The track star not only applied for licenses to own more guns, but actually bought them, too, according to John Beare, vice chairman of the Lowveld Firearm Collectors Association which accepted Pistorius as a paid-up member last April. He and Pistorius were introduced at a Johannesburg hotel in January 2012, and it was there that Beare first explained to the athlete and some of his friends how to become certified collectors.

Had he not become a collector, Pistorius would under South African law have been limited to a maximum of four firearms for self-defense, of which only two could have been handguns, according to Johannesburg attorney Martin Hood, who specializes in firearms law.

Carvel Webb, chairman of the National Arms and Ammunition Collectors Confederation of South Africa, an umbrella group for the country's 2,000 approved private collectors including Pistorius, said that in the wake of Steenkamp's killing his group will now verify that Pistorius fulfilled the necessary requirements to be accepted as a collector and a decision in January to let him start collecting semi-automatic rifles.

"We will review all of those just to see if we are happy with it," Webb said.

Pistorius made no secret of his passion for firearms. Reporters who visited him at home in Pretoria, the capital, saw the pistol he kept by his bed and was licensed to own. He practiced at firing ranges both in South Africa and in Europe where he trained for the London Games. But apparently less well-known was his involvement with gun collectors to start building a firearms collection.

Beare said he twice observed Pistorius shoot at firing ranges and also at a clay pigeon shoot, but saw nothing to suggest he could be a menace with a gun.

"His safety was good," Beare told the AP. "He wouldn't do anything irrational with a firearm, because then I would have nailed him immediately."

Pistorius says he mistook his girlfriend Steenkamp for a home intruder and shot her while she was in his bathroom toilet, firing through the closed door. Pistorius' license for the 9 mm pistol was issued on Sept. 10, 2010, according to the South African Police Service's National Firearms Center. It was registered for self-defense

Prosecutors have charged Pistorius with premeditated murder for killing Steenkamp with three of four shots fired in the early hours of Feb. 14.

"I had no reason to believe that there was anything wrong, that he could have a dark side, that there could be something wrong," said Beare.

However, Roberto Siriu, president of the Tolmezzo shooting range in northeast Italy, said Pistorius did not seem to him to be well-trained with firearms.

"No, I don't think so. He didn't give me that impression," Siriu told the AP.

Pistorius shot at Tolmezzo during breaks from athletic training in the nearby town of Gemona. In November 2011, Pistorius posted a photo of himself firing a rifle at Tolmezzo, with the words: "Had a 96% headshot over 300m from 50shots! Bam!"

Last June, seven weeks before he made history by running at the London Games, Pistorius tweeted that he was going back to Tolmezzo to shoot vintage rifles, adding: "Amped to the max! Yeaaah boi!!"

Gun collecting is regulated by South Africa's stringent Firearms Control Act. Pistorius had to explain to his collecting association, both in writing and in interviews, what types of firearms he wanted to collect and why.

Beare said he and two other association members interviewed Pistorius in June or July 2012, shortly before he became the first double-amputee Olympic runner.

"He was still budding (as a collector) at that stage. He had done his research on it and he was interested in American firearms," Beare said.

The association certified Pistorius as a beginner collector, Beare said. Pistorius bought two Smith & Wesson revolvers and three shotguns and sent photos of the firearms and their serial numbers to the association, as required, Beare said.

But Pistorius couldn't take actual physical possession of his firearms because he didn't have police-issued licenses for them. So the weapons were kept for safekeeping by a gun dealer, Beare said. At firing ranges, Pistorius used other people's guns, he added.

Pistorius eventually applied for the licenses in January, according to the National Firearms Center. It listed his weapons as:

?A Smith & Wesson model 500. With a caliber of .500 Magnum, it is called "the most powerful production revolver in the world" by its manufacturer in Springfield, Massachusetts. "A hunting handgun for any game animal walking," the company's website says. Pistorius was "quite fascinated" with that particular weapon, Beare said.

?A Smith & Wesson .38-caliber revolver.

?Three shotguns: A Mossberg, a Maverick and a Winchester, all American makes.

?A Vektor .223-caliber rifle.

The current status of those applications is unclear. Firearms Center officials said after Pistorius killed Steenkamp that the six license applications were sent back to a Johannesburg police station to be refilled, but the reason for that wasn't given.

For civilian collectors, the Vektor is the closest they can get to the R-series assault rifles used by South Africa's military. For civilian use, the rifle is modified to make it only semi-automatic. Because it is classed as a restricted weapon in South Africa, Pistorius had to upgrade his status from a beginner to a more serious collector.

As part of that upgrading process, Pistorius was interviewed again by his collectors' club this January, Beare said. It accepted the runner's explanation that he wanted to collect weapons linked to South African military history, Beare said. He said that entitled Pistorius to start collecting not just South African firearms but also Russian-made guns that guerrilla groups have used over the years to fight South African forces.

Pistorius bought the Vektor around December, and sent the serial number and a photo to the association, Beare added.

Collecting firearms can be expensive. Vektors sell for US$1,100 to US$1,500 on South African gun-resale websites. Pistorius' athletic success and sponsorships have made him wealthy. Beare said he understood that Pistorius was planning to build on his collection over time.

"You start small and then you start growing," he said.

Some have questioned why Pistorius felt he needed such a variety of weapons and whether the association should have certified him.

Andre Pretorius, president of the Professional Firearm Trainers Council, a regulatory body for South African firearms instructors, said he struggles to see how pistols, shotguns and a semi-automatic rifle could be regarded as a coherent collection.

"The makes differ, the models differ and generally a collection needs to have a theme," said Pretorius. "I don't see there's a theme here."

But Webb, of the collectors' confederation, disagreed.

"There was a logic," Webb told the AP. "He's got three approved areas of interest."
