TaxACT Deluxe Online

By Kathy Yakal

2nd Story Software has had the distinction over the last several years of being the only personal income tax-prep provider that offers a free version that is the same as its paid version in terms of actual tax preparation tools. The free version of TaxACT Deluxe Online only lacks some found extras found in the paid version, such as an import tool, donation tracker, and calculators (none of which I even used in my evaluation). But if you don't need to file a state return, you can prepare and print or e-file your IRS 1040 forms and schedules absolutely free.

It's for this reason that I said last year and will say again this year: The TaxACT site should be your first stop when you're getting ready to endure your annual tax ordeal. Jump to the topics that you think are the most complex in your return and see how the site handles them. If the forms you need are supported?TaxACT includes all of the most common and many that are used less frequently?and the depth of guidance is acceptable, you don't have to look any further.

Lest you think this is a gimmick designed to market a lot of other products and services to you, or that TaxACT is a second-rate site published by a fly-by-night company, know that it's neither. TaxACT has been around for as long as its competitors, though in its earlier years it was known as Personal TaxEdge and published by a different company (some of the principals moved forward with the product and kept it going under a new name). There's no catch. TaxACT Deluxe Online is a solid rival for the other sites reviewed here. It just happens to be free.

Almost a Carbon Copy
Like its competitors, TaxACT looks and works much like the 2011 version did, with one big difference: TaxTutor Guidance, which comes from renowned tax resource J.K. Lasser, has been rewritten to be clearer and simpler. This was one of TaxACT's weaknesses, so the change was welcome. Beyond that, the company is now offering an audit insurance plan ? similar to competitors' ? for $39.95. And 2nd Story Software is branching out a bit; it will produce an inexpensive service for creating your own will.

TaxACT Deluxe Online does practically everything TurboTax Deluxe Online?and H&R Block At Home Deluxe Online?do. Besides supporting a comparable number of forms and schedules and incorporating new tax laws since last year, it walks you through an interview-like process ("Q&A") rather than making you enter data on IRS documents. It asks you simple, clear questions about everything that needs to be on those official forms. There are often several questions on each screen, and you simply enter information in fields or select options from lists or check boxes to answer them.

You advance forward and backward by clicking buttons. TaxACT doesn't force you to complete the screens in order like H&R Block At Home Deluxe Online does. And when you come across particularly complex topics, all of these sites offer the option of taking a more directed, simplified route.

In the background, TaxACT transfers those responses to the correct lines on the 1040 and its assorted forms and schedules. When you're done, TaxACT combs through your return and alerts you to anything that's missing or seems incorrect. After you've fixed anything necessary, what comes out when you click "Print" is the actual IRS forms filled out with the information you provided. You can also file your return electronically at no cost.

Neuroscientists pinpoint location of fear memory in amygdala

Jan. 27, 2013 ? A rustle of undergrowth in the outback: it's a sound that might make an animal or person stop sharply and be still, in the anticipation of a predator. That "freezing" is part of the fear response, a reaction to a stimulus in the environment and part of the brain's determination of whether to be afraid of it.

A neuroscience group at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) led by Assistant Professor Bo Li Ph.D., together with collaborator Professor Z. Josh Huang Ph.D., have just released the results of a new study that examines the how fear responses are learned, controlled, and memorized. They show that a particular class of neurons in a subdivision of the amygdala plays an active role in these processes.

Locating fear memory in the amygdala

Previous research had indicated that structures inside the amygdalae, a pair of almond-shaped formations that sit deep within the brain and are known to be involved in emotion and reward-based behavior, may be part of the circuit that controls fear learning and memory. In particular, a region called the central amygdala, or CeA, was thought to be a passive relay for the signals relayed within this circuit.

Li's lab became interested when they observed that neurons in a region of the central amygdala called the lateral subdivision, or CeL, "lit up" in a particular strain of mice while studying this circuit.

"Neuroscientists believed that changes in the strength of the connections onto neurons in the central amygdala must occur for fear memory to be encoded," Li says, "but nobody had been able to actually show this."

This led the team to further probe into the role of these neurons in fear responses and furthermore to ask the question: If the central amygdala stores fear memory, how is that memory trace read out and translated into fear responses?

To examine the behavior of mice undergoing a fear test the team first trained them to respond in a Pavlovian manner to an auditory cue. The mice began to "freeze," a very common fear response, whenever they heard one of the sounds they had been trained to fear.

To study the particular neurons involved, and to understand them in relation to the fear-inducing auditory cue, the CSHL team used a variety of methods. One of these involved delivering a gene that encodes for a light-sensitive protein into the particular neurons Li's group wanted to look at.

By implanting a very thin fiber-optic cable directly into the area containing the photosensitive neurons, the team was able to shine colored laser light with pinpoint accuracy onto the cells, and in this manner activate them. This is a technique known as optogenetics. Any changes in the behavior of the mice in response to the laser were then monitored.

A subset of neurons in the central amygdala controls fear expression

The ability to probe genetically defined groups of neurons was vital because there are two sets of neurons important in fear-learning and memory processes. The difference between them, the team learned, was in their release of message-carrying neurotransmitters into the spaces called synapses between neurons. In one subset of neurons, neurotransmitter release was enhanced; in another it was diminished. If measurements had been taken across the total cell population in the central amygdala, neurotransmitter levels from these two distinct sets of neurons would have been averaged out, and thus would not have been detected.

Li's group found that fear conditioning induced experience-dependent changes in the release of neurotransmitters in excitatory synapses that connect with inhibitory neurons -- neurons that suppress the activity of other neurons -- in the central amygdala. These changes in the strength of neuronal connections are known as synaptic plasticity.

Particularly important in this process, the team discovered, were somatostatin-positive (SOM+) neurons. Somatostatin is a hormone that affects neurotransmitter release. Li and colleagues found that fear-memory formation was impaired when they prevent the activation of SOM+ neurons.

SOM+ neurons are necessary for recall of fear memories, the team also found. Indeed, the activity of these neurons alone proved sufficient to drive fear responses. Thus, instead of being a passive relay for the signals driving fear learning and responses in mice, the team's work demonstrates that the central amygdala is an active component, and is driven by input from the lateral amygdala, to which it is connected.

"We find that the fear memory in the central amygdala can modify the circuit in a way that translates into action -- or what we call the fear response," explains Li.

In the future Li's group will try to obtain a better understanding of how these processes may be altered in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other disorders involving abnormal fear learning. One important goal is to develop pharmacological interventions for such disorders.

Li says more research is needed, but is hopeful that with the discovery of specific cellular markers and techniques such as optogenetics, a breakthrough can be made.

New insights into conquering influenza

Jan. 29, 2013 ? Researchers from the University of Melbourne and The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute (WEHI) have discovered a new protein that protects against viral infections such as influenza.

As influenza spreads through the northern hemisphere winter, Dr Linda Wakim and her colleagues in the Laboratory of Professor Jose Villadangos from the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, believe they have a new clue to why some people fight infections better than others.

The lab has been investigating the 'defensive devices' contained within the T-cells that are located on exposed body surfaces such as skin and mucosal surfaces to ward off infection. T-cells detect cells infected with viruses and kill them before the virus can reproduce within the infected cell and spread to other cells.

Researchers found these cells contain the protein IFITM3 and this makes them more resistant to viral infections such as Influenza. The findings have been published in Nature Immunology.

"If we learn how to increase the number and longevity of T-cells expressing IFITM3, this could lead to improved vaccines that promote the generation of more resistant T-cells able to provide the greatest protection, for longer." Professor Villadangos said.

Dr Wakim said "We are currently trying to understand why some T-cells and not others express this protective molecule. Probably they encounter some form of chemical signal (a cytokine, or a surface molecule) in the tissues where they lodge, which induces the expression of IFITM3. If we identify these chemical cues, we may be able to include them in future vaccines."

Best friends influence when teenagers have first drink

Jan. 28, 2013 ? Chances are the only thing you remember about your first swig of alcohol is how bad the stuff tasted. What you didn't know is the person who gave you that first drink and when you had it says a lot about your predisposition to imbibe later in life.

A national study by a University of Iowa-led team has found that adolescents who get their first drink from a friend are more likely to drink sooner in life, which past studies show makes them more prone to abusing alcohol when they get older. The finding is intended to help specialists predict when adolescents are likely to first consume alcohol, with the aim of heading off problem drinking at the pass.

"When you start drinking, even with kids who come from alcoholic families, they don't get their first drinks from their family," says Samuel Kuperman, a child and adolescent psychiatrist at the UI. "They get their first drinks from their friends. They have to be able to get it. If they have friends who have alcohol, then it's easier for them to have that first drink."

The basis for the study, published this month in the journal Pediatrics, is compelling: One-third of eighth graders in the United States report they've tried alcohol, according to a 2011 study of 20,000 teenagers conducted by the University of Michigan and funded by the National Institutes of Health. By 10th grade, more than half say they've had a first drink, and that percentage shoots to 70 percent by their senior year.

"There's something driving kids to drink," explains Kuperman, corresponding author on the paper. "Maybe it's the coolness factor or some mystique about it. So, we're trying to educate kids about the risks associated with drinking and give them alternatives."

Kuperman and his team built their formula from two longstanding measures of adolescent drinking behavior -- the Semi-Structured Assessment for the Genetics and Alcoholism and the Achenbach Youth Self Report. From those measures of nearly two-dozen variables and a review of the literature, the UI-led team found five to be the most important predictors: two separate measures of disruptive behavior, a family history of alcohol dependence, a measure of poor social skills, and whether most best friends drink alcohol.

The researchers then looked at how the five variables worked in concert. Surprisingly, a best friend who drank and had access to alcohol was the most important predictor. In fact, adolescents whose best friend used alcohol were twice as likely to have a first drink, the researchers found. Moreover, if considered independently of the other variables, teenagers whose best friends drank are three times as likely to begin drinking themselves, the study found, underscoring the sway that friends have in adolescents' drinking behavior.

"Family history doesn't necessarily drive the age of first drink," notes Kuperman, who has studied teen drinking for more than a decade. "It's access. At that age (14 or 15), access trumps all. As they get older, then family history plays a larger role."

The current study drew from a pool of 820 adolescents at six sites across the country. The participants were 14 to 17 years old, with a median age of 15.5, nearly identical to the typical age of an adolescent's first drink found in previous studies. More than eight in 10 respondents came from what the researchers deemed high-risk families, but more than half of the teenagers had no alcohol-dependent parents. Tellingly, among those adolescents who reported having had drunk alcohol, nearly four in ten said their best friends also drank.

The result underscores previous findings that teenagers who have their first drink before 15 years of age are more likely to abuse alcohol or become dependent. It also supports the screening questions selected in the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism and the American Academy of Pediatrics initiative to identify and help youth at risk for alcohol use, the researchers write.

Kuperman, whose faculty appointment is in the Carver College of Medicine, says he hopes to use the study to delve into the genetics underpinning alcoholism, chiefly tracking adolescents who use alcohol and see whether they have genes that match up with their parents if they also are problem drinkers.

"We're trying to separate out those who experiment with alcohol to those who go on to problematic drinking," he says.

Iran denies explosion at underground uranium facility

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran has denied media reports of a major explosion at one of its uranium enrichment sites, describing them as "Western propaganda" designed to influence upcoming nuclear negotiations.

Reuters has been unable to verify reports since Friday of an explosion at the underground Fordow bunker, near the religious city of Qom, that some Israeli and Western media have said caused significant damage.

Tehran has accused Israel and the United States of being behind cyber attacks and the assassination of its nuclear scientists, aiming to sabotage a nuclear program which the West suspects hides an attempt to develop nuclear weapons.

"The false news of an explosion at Fordow is Western propaganda ahead of nuclear negotiations to influence their process and outcome," state news agency IRNA quoted the deputy head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organisation, Saeed Shamseddin Bar Broudi, as saying late on Sunday.

The IRNA report also quoted the head of parliament's national security and foreign affairs committee, Alaeddin Boroujerdi, strongly denying there had been an explosion.

The plant at Fordow in late 2011 began producing uranium enriched to 20 percent fissile purity, compared with the 3.5 percent level needed for nuclear energy plants, and has been operating 700 centrifuges there since January this year, according to Western diplomats.

Western governments are concerned that high-grade enrichment is a significant step towards developing a nuclear weapons capability.

Iran maintains its nuclear activities are entirely peaceful and that it began producing high-enriched uranium that it was no longer able to obtain from abroad for medical use.

The two sides are set to resume negotiations in coming weeks but the talks have been beset by delays and wrangling over dates and location.

Arrests made in Brazil fire as funerals begin

SANTA MARIA, Brazil (AP) ? Brazilian police say they've made three arrests and are seeking a fourth person in connection with a nightclub fire that killed more than 230 people.

Inspector Ranolfo Vieira Junior said at a Monday press conference that the arrests are for investigative purposes. He says the detentions have five-day limits.

He declined to identify those arrested or the fourth person sought.

More than 230 people died early Sunday during the fire at a university party in southern Brazil. Police have said they think a band's pyrotechnics show ignited sound insulation on the ceiling, causing the blaze.

The Zero Hora newspaper quotes lawyer Jader Marques as saying his client Elissandro Spohr, a co-owner of the club, was arrested. The paper also says two band members were arrested.

Funerals began Monday in the city of Santa Maria, Brazil, where the blaze took place.

Tancredo Won't Smoke Pot, After All

Tom Tancredo has just said "no."

Under pressure from his wife and grandchildren, the former GOP congressman will renege on a public pledge to smoke marijuana, which he made after losing a bet on Colorado's pot-legalization initiative on Election Day.

Tancredo, a conservative Republican who has been out of Congress since 2009, supported Colorado's Amendment 64, which legalized marijuana in his home state when it passed on election day. Tancredo said he had never smoked marijuana and that he did not condone its use, but argued that the government shouldn't tell adults what they can or can't ingest.

The former congressman never thought it would pass. "I thought it would take at least one more time around to do it," Tancredo told ABC News last week. He made a bet with film producer Adam Hartle, who was in Colorado to make a film on the pot measure, agreeing to smoke marijuana if it became legal.

Recently, Tancredo said he would make good on the bet, agreeing to inhale "just a puff" with Hartle, leaving the filmmaker to handle the marijuana procurement. On Friday, he even suggested Democratic Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper should join in.

But that made a lot of people unhappy, including Tancredo's family, and now the former congressman says he won't do it.

"My wife is absolutely-she's pissed," Tancredo told ABC News last week. "Oh man, she is not happy."

Neither were his conservative backers.

"My conservative friends just believe what I'm doing is encouraging people to smoke it," Tancredo said. "I don't think people should. That decision is up to an individual. An adult, in this society, is not something the government should have any control over."

Finally, on Friday night, Tancredo cracked under pressure from his grandchildren.

They were "very upset with grandpa," Tancredo told ABC News, and for him, that was it.

"Will have to welch. Political heat is one thing. Am use to that," Tancredo wrote in an email. "Heat from my family is quite another."

DNP Samsung plays favorites, blesses Korean Galaxy Grand with quadcore and LTE

After being unveiled at the close of 2012, yesterday Samsung announced the Galaxy Grand for its native South Korea. At a glance the domestic build of this handset looks nearly identical to its foreign counterpart, however the device's spec sheet tells a different story. Opposed to a meager dual-core chip and faux 4G connectivity, the Korean version of the Galaxy Grand sports a beefy 1.4GHz processor, along with LTE network support. Additional unique features include NFC capabilities and USB 3.0. Aside from these hometown enhancements, the device's 5-inch WVGA display, dual-cameras and Android 4.1 operating system remain intact. Set to be available on three unannounced Korean carriers at an undisclosed time, potential suitors can pick up this superior version of the Galaxy Grand for 350,000 won (around $325).

Lawmakers see immigration overhaul this year

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Republican and Democratic lawmakers were cautiously optimistic Sunday that a long-sought overhaul of the nation's immigration system that includes a pathway to citizenship for the 11 million illegal immigrants currently in the country will clear Congress this year, the result of changes in the political landscape shown in November's election.

"We are trying to work our way through some very difficult issues," said Illinois' Sen. Richard Durbin, the No. 2 Democrat in the Senate. "But, we are committed to a comprehensive approach to finally, in this country, have an immigration law we can live with. We have virtually been going maybe 25 years without a clear statement about immigration policy. That's unacceptable in this nation of immigrants."

Sen. Robert Menendez, who along with Durbin and Sen. John McCain, is part of the six-member, bipartisan Senate group working on a framework for immigration legislation to be announced this week, said current politics dictate that a pathway for citizenship must be included.

"Let's be very clear: having a pathway to earned legalization is an essential element. And I think that we are largely moving in that direction as an agreement," said Menendez, D-N.J., said.

But the package "will have the enhancement of the border security," he said, nodding to Republicans' priority to tighten borders to prevent future illegal immigration.

He also said the package would have to crack down on employers hiring undocumented workers.

Arizona Republican McCain has returned to the issue after having led a failed push to fix the nation's broken immigration system ahead of his 2008 bid for the White House.

McCain said: "What's changed is, honestly, is that there is a new, I think, appreciation on both sides of the aisle ? including, maybe more importantly on the Republican side of the aisle, that we have to enact a comprehensive immigration reform bill."

Despite making little progress on immigration in his first term, President Barack Obama won more than 70 percent of the Latino vote, in part because of the conservative positions on immigration that Republican nominee Mitt Romney staked out during the GOP primary. Latino voters accounted for 10 percent of the electorate in November.

Obama is to press his case for immigration changes during a trip to Las Vegas Tuesday: a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants that includes paying fines and back taxes; increased border security; mandatory penalties for businesses that employ unauthorized immigrants; and improvements to the legal immigration system, including giving green cards to high-skilled workers and lifting caps on legal immigration for the immediate family members of U.S. citizens.

In an opinion piece published online Sunday in the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Sen. Marco Rubio, also a member of the bipartisan Senate group, laid out his proposal to address the issue. The Florida Republican, son of Cuban immigrants, wrote that "significant progress" on enforcing immigration laws must be certified before unauthorized immigrants now in the country are allowed to apply for residency and "get in the back of the line."

Rep. Paul Ryan, the 2012 Republican candidate for vice president, said he backs Rubio's proposal.

"Immigration is a good thing. We're here because of immigration. We need to make sure it works," Wisconsin's Ryan said.

If Republicans fail to act, they will pay the price in elections for generations, McCain warned.

"Well, I'll give you a little straight talk: Look at the last election... We are losing dramatically the Hispanic vote, which we think should be ours for a variety of reasons," McCain said.

McCain and Menendez spoke with ABC's "This Week," Durbin appeared on "Fox News Sunday" and Ryan was on NBC's "Meet the Press."

TIPS! Browse through web hosting directories. They list nearly all that is out there, enabling you to figure out which ones fit you best for price and features.

When deciding on a web host, choose a provider that tracks your traffic statistics for you. A good way to double-check the traffic numbers provided by your hosting service is to install a visitor counter on your landing page. Use this information to tweak the way that you reach out to the intended market for your business.

TIPS! Do you only have dial-up Internet service? Then don?t host your site. You?ll need a fast and reliable connection for hosting.

Some web hosting sites are free and can help you save money and cut costs, but these usually come with a catch. This usually means that they will put advertisements on your site, and you will have a limited amount of space to store your website. Free web hosts generally don?t work out if you want to host a business site. The ads and limited storage space can make the site appear unprofessional.

TIPS! Most of the applications and add-ons your host will offer will be useless to you, so don?t include them in your comparisons unless you have a concrete use for them already. You may see offers for unlimited storage, which can seem attractive, until you realize you have little data storage need.

Pay attention to the reputation of the companies you consider. Make sure you read all the articles you can about the web host to learn what kind of reputation they have and what services they will provide reliably. Others make promises they cannot deliver on, and should be avoided.

TIPS! If you are certain you will be using the same host for several years, try finding one that may give you a discount for years of continuous business. This could end up saving you a lot of money.

If you wish to experiment with new software, look for a plan with a VPS or virtual private server. VPS plans will let you have control over everything that has to do with your web site, this includes all of your software installations and deletions, it is like you have your own server. Before you sign up for a VPS plan, make sure you are familiar with all the aspects of server administration.

TIPS! Make a hard copy backup of your website data, whether your web host requires it or not. It is very important that you do this, not just for compliance, but mostly because you want to have your data backed up and safe.

Ultimately, your web host should be capable of supporting multiple programming languages, including current ones, and any that could be used in the future. It will be a hard task to start up your website, if you are trying to run it using a language that your hosting company doesn?t support. You should also keep in mind potential future languages you wish to use, otherwise you won?t be able to add them to your site. Switching web hosts can take a lot of work.

TIPS! Be wary of web hosts with a price that seems too good to be true. If you are tempted to choose a cheap host, find out why the price is so low.

Are you looking at free web hosts? One thing that many free web hosts do not provide is content backup. This means you?ll need to make your own arrangement for backing up your site. If you choose not to do this, a problem with the site could result in substantial data loss.

TIPS! You need to protect what you invest into your site by buying your domain name outright instead of registering it through your host. Even though this may be convenient for you, it can put your ownership of a domain name in jeopardy if something goes wrong for the host.

The first things you need to determine are disk space and bandwidth needs for your website. Both these factors will depend solely on the site you?ve designed. There are plenty of web hosting providers that can offer you unlimited bandwidth and file storage space. Failing to account for adequate capacity in these important functions will cause your website to load slowly and cost you customers.

TIPS! Make sure any web host you sign up with has multiple Internet links. With only a single connection, you run the risk that whenever it goes down, so does your website.

As you now have seen, these companies will offer different things, if you pick the right one you will get the most out of it. Use the tips above to find the right hosting company and get ready to take your online business to the next level.

These Moleskine Notebooks Are Your Analog-Word-Processing Deal of the Day

Moleskine notebooks are marketed as if they're the same notebooks that Picasso and Hemingway used. That's a bit of a stretch, but that doesn't mean that Moleskine notebooks aren't fantastic and totally worth the premium price. The paper is thicker — almost creamy — the covers are feel nice, and the weight and color of Moleskine's page lining is just right. They're great notebooks. They also never go on sale. More »

Let's Make It Official With a Press Release: J.J. Abrams to Direct ...

by Perry Michael Simon on January 25, 2013

jjabramsstarwarspostSo, Disney?s made it official that, as we mentioned yesterday, J.J. Abrams will direct Star Wars: Chapter VII. We already knew that Michael Arndt was writing it, and the press release confirms that, along with Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg on board as consultants.

But we can let the press release issued late Friday speak for itself. So, lets:

J.J. Abrams to Direct Star Wars: Episode VII

J.J. Abrams will direct Star Wars: Episode VII, the first of a new series of Star Wars films to come from Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy. Abrams will be directing and Academy Award-winning writer Michael Arndt will write the screenplay.

?It?s very exciting to have J.J. aboard leading the charge as we set off to make a new Star Wars movie,? said Kennedy. ?J.J. is the perfect director to helm this. Beyond having such great instincts as a filmmaker, he has an intuitive understanding of this franchise. He understands the essence of the Star Wars experience, and will bring that talent to create an unforgettable motion picture.?

George Lucas went on to say ?I?ve consistently been impressed with J.J. as a filmmaker and storyteller. He?s an ideal choice to direct the new Star Wars film and the legacy couldn?t be in better hands.?

?To be a part of the next chapter of the Star Wars saga, to collaborate with Kathy Kennedy and this remarkable group of people, is an absolute honor,? J.J. Abrams said. ?I may be even more grateful to George Lucas now than I was as a kid.?

J.J., his longtime producing partner Bryan Burk, and Bad Robot are on board to produce along with Kathleen Kennedy under the Disney | Lucasfilm banner.

Also consulting on the project are Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg. Kasdan has a long history with Lucasfilm, as screenwriter on The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Return of the Jedi. Kinberg was writer on Sherlock Holmes and Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

Abrams and his production company Bad Robot have a proven track record of blockbuster movies that feature complex action, heartfelt drama, iconic heroes and fantastic production values with such credits as Star Trek, Super 8, Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol, and this year?s Star Trek Into Darkness. Abrams has worked with Lucasfilm?s preeminent postproduction facilities, Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound, on all of the feature films he has directed, beginning with Mission: Impossible III. He also created or co-created such acclaimed television series as Felicity, Alias, Lost and Fringe.

Okay, there it is.? If you haven?t weighed in yet on the prospect of J.J. directing the next chapter, or, for that matter, ostensibly leaving the Star Trek franchise because doing both might be a little problematic, the comments are open.

Diet, parental behavior and preschool can boost children's IQ

Jan. 25, 2013 ? Supplementing children's diets with fish oil, enrolling them in quality preschool, and engaging them in interactive reading all turn out to be effective ways to raise a young child's intelligence, according to a new report published in Perspectives on Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

Using a technique called meta-analysis, a team led by John Protzko, a doctoral student at the NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, combined the findings from existing studies to evaluate the overall effectiveness of each type of intervention. In collaboration with NYU Steinhardt professors Joshua Aronson and Clancy Blair, leaders in the field of intelligence, Protzko analyzed the best available studies involving samples of children from birth and kindergarten from their newlyassembled "Database of Raising Intelligence."

"Our aim in creating this database is to learn what works and what doesn't work to raise people's intelligence," said Protzko. "For too long, findings have been disconnected and scattered throughout a wide variety of journals. The broad consensus about what works is founded on only two or three very high-profile studies."

All of the studies in this database rely on a normal population (participants without clinical diagnoses of intellectual disabilities), focus on interventions that are sustained over time, use widely accepted measures of intelligence, and, most importantly, are randomly controlled trials (participants selected at random to receive one of the interventions).

"The larger goal here is to understand the nature of intelligence, and if and how it can be nurtured at every stage of development," said Aronson, Protzko's advisor. "This is just a first step in a long process of understanding. It is by no means the last word. In fact, one of the main conclusions is how little high quality research exists in the field and how much more needs to be done."

Overall, the results of the meta-analyses indicated that certain dietary and environmental interventions can be effective in raising children's IQ.

Supplementing pregnant women and newborns with long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, foods rich in Omega-3, were found to boost children's IQ by more than 3.5 points. These essential fatty acids may help raise intelligence by providing the building blocks for nerve cell development that the body cannot produce on its own.

There is insufficient research, however, to determine whether other types of supplements -- including iron, B-complex vitamins, riboflavin, thiamine, niacin, and zinc -- have beneficial effects on intelligence.

Enrolling an economically disadvantaged child into an early education intervention was found to raise his or her IQ by more than four points; interventions that specifically included a center-based education component raised a child's IQ by more than seven points.

The researchers hypothesize that early education interventions may help to raise children's IQ by increasing their exposure to complex environments that are cognitively stimulating and demanding. It's not clear, however, whether these results apply more broadly to kids from different socioeconomic backgrounds.

Surprisingly, Protzko, Aronson, and Blair found no evidence to support the idea that early education interventions that take place earlier in childhood are more effective than those that begin later.

Interventions focused on interactive reading -- teaching parents how to engage their children while reading with them -- were found to raise children's IQ by over 6 points. These interventions do not seem to have an effect for children over 4 years old, suggesting that the interventions may accelerate language development, which, in turn, boosts IQ.

Sending a child to preschool was found to raise his or her IQ by more than four points, and preschools that include a language development component were found to boost IQ by more than seven points. The link between preschool and intelligence could be a function of increased exposure to language or the result of the overall cognitive complexity of the preschool environment.

"Our current findings strengthen earlier conclusions that complex environments build intelligence, but do cast doubt on others, including evidence that earlier interventions are always most effective," Protzko explained. "Overall, identifying the link between essential fatty acids and intelligence gives rise to tantalizing new questions for future research and we look forward to exploring this finding."

International adoptions by U.S. parents fall again in 2012

(Reuters) - The number of children adopted internationally by American parents fell 7 percent last year, continuing a multi-year decline brought on in part by tightened adoption rules, a U.S. State Department report showed on Thursday.

Some 8,668 children were adopted into U.S. families from abroad in the 2012 fiscal year, down from 9,320 the previous year, with more children coming from China than from any other country, the report said.

"This is a continuation of a trend," said Adam Pertman, executive director of the Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute and the author of "Adoption Nation."

"There's no lack of, if you will, demand in this country," he told Reuters. "People would like to adopt more children; the issue is whether those children are available. And they're becoming less and less available, and that's what the numbers show."

The number of foreign children adopted by U.S. parents peaked in 2004 at 22,884, according to U.S. government figures.

China, which sent 2,697 children to the United States last year, has for years sent more children to American parents than has any other country, in large part due to its one-child policy. Ethiopia was the second most popular country for U.S. adoptions, with 1,568 adoptions last year.

Russia ranked third with 748 children sent to the United States. The report, covering the fiscal year ending on September 30, concluded before Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law last month banning Americans from adopting Russian children.

The ban is part of a package of legislation that responds to a U.S. law known as the Magnitsky Act, which excludes Russians from the United States who are suspected of involvement in the death in custody of anti-graft lawyer Sergei Magnitsky in 2009 or of other human rights violations.

Russia's Supreme Court has ruled that, in cases where adoptions had been approved by courts before the new year, the children should be handed over to their new parents.

TOUGHENED REGULATIONS

Part of the decline in adoption numbers can be attributed to the signing of the Hague Convention on intercountry adoption, Pertman said.

The convention entered into force for the United States in 2008 and improved regulation of international adoptions to try to cut down on corruption. But it also slowed down adoptions and led to a shutdown in some countries.

The other factor contributing to the decline is that some countries are changing the way they view and handle their intercountry adoptions.

One of those countries is China, which has begun to re-examine whether it can afford to lose the large number of baby girls it allows to leave the country to international adoptive parents, Pertman said.

Most adoptions from China involve girls, because many parents there prefer to have their one child be a boy for social and economic reasons. China has created hurdles for international adoptive parents as it has sought to build up its own domestic adoption program.

As a result of the geopolitical changes making it more difficult for Americans to adopt from abroad, they are having to wait longer to bring a child to the United States, Pertman said. Average wait times are now between two and five years, depending on the country, he said.

"The people who suffer most as a consequence of this are the children who remain in orphanages, who will not have a family in their own country or in the United States," Pertman said.

The largest number of adoptions in the United States continues to come from within the country's foster care system, which accounts for over 50,000 adoptions a year, Pertman said.

Professional Parents? Yes!, Part 2 of 2 | Large Families on Purpose

Professional Parents? Yes!, Part 2 of 2 | Large Families on Purpose

Professional Parents? Yes!, Part 2 of 2

One of those comments that we get fairly often is, "Wow, you guys are professional parents."? And my answer is No, and Yes!? I am not professional parents in the sense that those people mean, that I have it all together and I've "arrived" as a parent and "have it all down".? Not at all.? I am learning and growing every day in learning to parent our children and in developing my own character as well as theirs.? Parenting is not something that people can have all the answers to or do well at all of the time ~ we can only do our very best.

However the answer to the professional parents comment is also a Yes!? Because I pursue it as my "profession".? When I think of the aspects of having a career - what that looks like, how people pursue it, how they view it, how they respond to it - then parenting to me is much the same thing.??

This post is part 2 of 2. For part 1, please click HERE.??

In this post I continue exploring what it means to be a professional parent and will cover:

?????????????? 8. Budget our finances

??????? ? ? ?? 9. Study to improve skills and knowledge
?????????????? 10. Requires our whole person
?????????????? 11. Practice team unity
?????????????? 12. Recognize our responsibilities

8. Budget our finances
All companies have to work within a budget or they would fail.? Finances need to be carefully allotted to make sure they cover the bills, to have some for savings, to purchase necessary items for future needs.? We need to budget our money for our family as well.? We can't just go along and hope to have enough; we need to work smarter and more responsibly.? Moms can do a great job of shopping frugally for their families.? This can be a huge blessing for our hard working husbands, to not have the wife draining the supplies but rather purchasing what is necessary and saving a lot of money by shopping wisely and not extravagantly.?
?When we worked outside of our homes before becoming wives and mothers we needed to manage the money we earned, or possibly that which a company we worked for earned.? We are able to be good managers of money when it is important to us, or to learn to do so if we need to.? So we should choose to budget for our family as well.?

Here are some posts I've written that go more in to the "practical how-to's" of budgeting our finances for the family:
? ?? * Becoming a Master Used Clothing Shopper!
???? * Large Families on Budgets - Making More Out Of Less, Part 1 of 2

9. Study to improve skills and knowledge
There is so much to be learned about being a wife and mother.? Many moms begin our parenting experience by reading about what to expect during pregnancy, and maybe going to a class or a few on pregnancy, delivery, car seat safety, and how to feed, bathe, and care for a newborn.? Then we learn how to help a baby sleep through the night, how to help a toddler learn to behave, learn how to homeschool.? We can learn about and implement skills in nutrition, science, economics, veterinary care, finances, medicine, law, physical education, sewing, cooking, the list is endless.? But we should pursue and be ON PURPOSE in learning all the time skills to benefit our families.? *smile* (Not reading novels, in my humble opinion.)

When we worked outside of our homes before becoming wives and mothers we were students and then often times employees, and we studied to be successful in school (learning the skills to do so, and proving our ability to do so) and often times studied to become more successful in our work.? We study things that we are interested in or deem valuable such as school and work, and even for hobbies.? We should give even greater value to our families.? *smile*

Here are some posts I've written that go more in to the "practical how-to's" of studying to improve our skills and knowledge in parenting & family:

10. Requires our whole person?
Parenting requires the commitment of our entire person:? physical, emotional, and spiritual.? Not just the physical commitment alone, of carrying and delivering babies, and then the upkeep of one's home.? Not just the emotional commitment alone, where we may go to an outside job all day and drop our children off at day care or public school, but then try to connect with them emotionally when we are home.? And not just the spiritual commitment alone, where we try to teach our children about the Lord after we've been away from them all day and are therefore emotionally disconnected.? We must commit all 3 parts of ourselves together to get the full investment and "fruit" that the Lord would be proud of.

When we worked outside of our homes before becoming wives and mothers... we probably were never actually required to invest all 3 parts of ourselves like this ever before.? *smile*? It is a very new discipline to us when we do become wives and mothers then, and it requires a lot of prayer, reliance on our Heavenly Father, self-sacrifice, trust in the Lord and in His plans for us from His Word (the Bible), patience with ourselves, perseverance, and learning together with our husbands.? But even when it may feel hard and new... we need to do this anyway, because we love our children with all that we are.

Here are some posts I've written that go more in to the "practical how-to's" of applying our whole person to the task at hand:
? ?? * Choosing Thankfulness?
? ?? * Motherhood With Vitality!, Part 1 of 2
? ?? * Large Families on Budgets - Making More Out of Less, Part 1 of 2

11. Practice team unity
It's important that we recognize and understand that we are a team member with our husband and children.? *smile*? We shouldn't try to carry the responsibilities of marriage and family and home life all by ourselves, it burns people out eventually and really cannot be done alone.? And most importantly, the Lord did not intend for us to do everything by our self.? We are to be managers of our homes.? We work together and play together.? We serve one another, connect as friends and companions, work towards goals as a family or as a married couple, learn together, worship together.? People thrive when they can work as a team with others, feeling motivated, valued, needed, and enjoyed.? Our husbands need this, we need this, and our children need this, too.? The world tells us that we should raise our children to be independent; but the Bible tells us that we are to be interdependent, relying upon one another, serving, building one another up, and needing each other.?

When we worked outside of our homes before becoming wives and mothers we most likely worked as a team either in our own families, or in a job or career we held.? We need to consider ourselves part of a team at home as well.

Here are some posts I've written that go more in to the "practical how-to's" of practicing team unity within the home:? ?? * Family Participation:? Chores for Kids?
? ?? * Marriage - Our High Priority?

12. Recognize our responsibilities

Scripture tells us that our children are our own responsibility - not someone else's.? We are to disciple them, protect them, teach them, and nurture them - not drop them off so that others can do these jobs in our place.? Many parents do not want this responsibility, or it feels too hard, so they do not accept it and instead pass it off to others.? They send their children out of the nest for public or private school, day care, Sunday school, youth group, organized sports, boy scouts, or even just frequent baby sitters while mom and dad go off and play or "serve" without their children...? I've heard many parents say that they pray for the protection of their young children while they send them off somewhere, and I'm thinking, He did send protection...it's you... There is much to be learned on this subject, and much to be considered very carefully.? I encourage parents to open their heart up to these truths, consider them carefully, and read further in the other posts I've written that go in to much detail and include much scripture.

When we worked outside of our homes before becoming wives and mothers, we had no idea what it would be like to have little parts of our heart walking around separate from us.? It can feel very scary.? *smile*? When we delivered our babies we thought that nothing and no one would ever take that little person from us.? We would die first.? But still most moms steel themselves against those God-given emotions and prepare to send that little baby off to day care for someone else to raise for 10 hours a day or so - most of that baby's waking hours - so that mom can go back to work in 6 weeks... And for what?? More money?? And moms cry at first, until they get used to it.? So sad, that a mom would let the world convince her that "getting used to it" is the best thing for her to do and that it's something she must endure and get past so that she can be "responsible."? Then she cries again when her child goes off to kindergarten for the first time... and then off to camp for the week... etc.? When really she should be considering the fact that those emotions are telling her something.? She's making the wrong decisions. ?

Bring that baby home.? Hold him close.? We need to raise our children in the safety and the protection of the "green house" of our homes where they are protected from diseases and negative influences that will kill their spirits.? We need to give them time to grow roots that are strong, so that when they're eventually transplanted in to the world they will be able to remain healthy physically, emotionally, and spiritually; to continue to grow on their own, withstand the storms, and not be swayed by the weeds that grow up around them. ?

Here are some posts I've written that go more in to the why's and "practical how-to's" of taking our responsibilities seriously:
? ?? * Homeschooling:? WHY Do We Do It?
? ?? * Organized Sports and Individual Hobbies - Appetites Can Lead to Addictions
? ?? * Large Family Discipleship:? Protecting Our Children's Minds Through Books?
? ?? * "Motherhood is a Calling (And Where Your Children Rank)"?

13. Don't just survive it but embrace it to achieve success
We need to embrace the gift of children.? *smile*? God has honored us with these little lives, and has entrusted them to us.? We need to celebrate that, and let the children know that we celebrate them.? Every one, including children, knows when they're just being tolerated but not enjoyed.? And I can guarantee you... if children do not feel enjoyed and invested in - they will go else where to find someone who does enjoy them and who will invest in them.? A teacher.? A coach.? A youth group leader.? Their peers.? We need to keep our children's hearts and not let them be lost to someone else.? For who ever has our children's hearts disciples them.? And "A student is not above his teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like his teacher" (Luke 6:40).

When we worked outside of our homes before becoming wives and mothers I'm sure we had great dreams and visions as to how romantic parenthood would be.? *smile*? We saw only of the sweetness, the tenderness, innocence, and smiles.? And there is so much of that with our children!? But there's that little person's sin nature, too, which can bring out the...well...not the best side of us.? *chuckle*? And that can be so very disheartening for us.? We have our own character that needs developing as we learn to be better parents, and our own faults to face.? But the Lord desires us to have freedom from our own faults!? *smile*? And He can bring freedom as we learn from Him and do the hard work.? But we need to not run away from the difficulties, but rather to hold Jesus' hand and let Him teach us, so that we can teach and disciple our children.? One of my favorite scripture verses is Isaiah 41:13, "For I am the Lord, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to, Do not fear; I will help you."

Here are some posts I've written that go more in to the "practical how-to's" of embracing parenting for greater success:
